VmwAROS 1.0 Released!
« on: December 15, 2008, 12:40:22 PM »
This new point-release includes many demanded and anticipated features like support for 68K applications (1), multiple archive types decompression, PDF reading support, Ken Lester's iconset and many, many improvements over standard AROS nightly builds.

Check this out at VmwAROS website!

VmwAROS provides the best AROS experience to everyone interested in using it. Former AmigaOS users can use their applications until an AROS one will be ported or re-created from scratch, AROS users can enjoy a completely pre-configured desktop and developers will find a complete development chain waiting for them, which includes Murks!IDE and a whole set of examples, languages, compilers, libraries and interpreters. People coming from other operating systems will find a smart, not-invasive, niche environment they can help improving too.

As usual, VmwAROS comes in two versions: Live! and VE. Live! provides a bootable DVD which can be launched and installed on real hardware and, for the first time, it includes also a Qemu based virtual machine for safer (but slower) testing. VE is the same environment, but already installed on a VMware virtual machine. For any further information, screenshots and download links, just contact VmwAROS official website at www.vmwaros.org.

(1) you'll need a legitimate copy of original AmigaOS files, Amiga ROM images and applications. VmwAROS directly supports Amiga Forever from Cloanto, which includes all the needed files.

Wow, lots of new features and progress in the past 2-3 months.  This is now a better alternative than Amithlon due to continued development.  Although I've never been a fan of VMWare hosted OSs but I think I'll actually download the VE version and try it.  I'm also pleased to know that the OWB porting is going well.   See:  http://sszymczy.rootnode.net/pictures/AROS_OWB.png

Just tried it, nice icons and a bit more usable than earlier versions. Does it have a builtin 68k emulator? Very cool if it does.

May I request a version for VirtualBox users?

I was unable to open the split .vmdk image intended for VMWare.

Many thanks,
James

You should have downloaded the Live! version instead, and used the iso to install it on a blank virtualbox vm.

With new icon set it looks lot amigalike and I like it very much.

If OWB comes than it could revive lots of our old Intel machines. After all it doesn't matter if machine is not PPC, community is Amiga.... With AROS, compatible software and big sticker.... finaly Amiga on laptops.....

Just read chapter "6. Running AmigaOS® software inside VmwAROS" in the PDF guide to learn how to set up AmiBridge.

PS: I just noticed that in the docs... two different "chapters six" esist.

Happy to read that. :-)

It doesn't. It does have quite nice UAE launcher though.

Hello
Is it possible now to easily recompile an existing simple amiga-source inside AROS ?
I mean does VmwAROS have GCC installed ready o compile ?
Is there a way to make the sources (a file) go from PC side to AROS side ?

THANKS
Alain

The answer is yes to all the questions. Please read the provided documentation in PDF to learn how to do all these things.
