Amiga Seeding the Success Campaign from DiscreetFX 4
« on: September 25, 2008, 12:27:13 PM »
This months Seeding the Success Campaign is going to be a little different. The winner is Rogue from Hyperion Entertainment for all his hard work on Amiga OS 4.1. He will of course get $100 but instead of Paypaling money we have set-up a Instant Bounty for him to receive a Sony PS3. We read with great interest in the recent Ars Technica interview that a port of Amiga OS 4.1 to PS3 had been seriously considered. We then read with sadness a comment from Rogue on aw.net that he did not have a PS3 and could not experiment on doing a port without one.

So getting Rogue a PS3 is the focus of Amiga Seeding the Success this month, We need your help though since Sony's PS3 is $399 plus tax and shipping and we have contributed only $100 of that. Once the goal of $399 plus shipping/tax is reached we will close this Instant Bounty and purchase/ship a PS3 to the address Rogue provides us. We expect this to be a fast and easy bounty so one of the lead OS 4.1 developers can have a PS3 in his possession quickly.

Rogue's PS3 Bounty

DiscreetFX has always strongly believed in OS 4.0/4.1 for the PS3 and has mentioned that to Hyperion many times. Hopefully this Bounty effort with your help can bring us one step closer to making it happen . The PS3 is already very Amiga like and even has one of the creators of the Amiga working on it (R J Mical). Sony's PS3 has millions of owners, many of which used to own an Amiga. Amiga OS 4.1 on PS3 would help expand and re-legitimize the Amiga brand, even if you own a SAM440, AmigaOne or mystery OS 4.1 box. More ways to run OS 4.1 will benefit users and developers. DiscreetFX believes in doing what it can to help make modern Amiga & Amiga like systems successful.

Best regards

- DiscreetFX Team

Rougue has said there is no point as the PS3 is too crippled.  I belive he said something to this effect on amigaworld

PS3 was hacked recently. They have reverse engineered the Flash memory, maybe they can un-cripple it now.

Could Hyperion really sell and officially support OS 4.x for a hacked PS3? I think that Sony's lawyers would shoot them down just on principle. If a hack is required, then it would have to be an unofficial port made by a third party that would allow an OS 4.x owner to run it on a PS3.

@Hans_

I wonder how long it took for LightRave to become legitimate.

It forced NewTek to make an unbundled version of LightWave 3D in a few months.

In theory, they wouldn't have to. If they released an ISO that installs OS4 on the PS3, that used Sony's crippled OS support, "someone else" could release a freeware opensource Picasso96 driver that uses a hack to use the GPU (if one was found).

As a PS3 owner, I find this all very interesting. Not sure if everyone knows this or not, but the PS3 does allow for an "Other OS" and people have been installing linux on it for some time. Don't see why that "Other OS" can't be Amiga OS 4.1. However, the PS3 hypervisor is still running and I'm not sure that full access to the GPU is allowed (Sony probably doesn't want someone coming out with free Linux games to rival costly PS3 games).

At any rate, even with the hypervisor and crippled access to the GPU, I'd be interested in a PS3 port.

This is all good news. Yes, the PS3 has the OtherOS install. BUT, and this is a big BUT, it's a pain to setup Linux, especially the Unbutu version.

If Hyperiaon could devise a "painless" Os4 install bundled with cool games and a classic emulator, with good looking skins with media functionalities you could have a great alternative to the linux distros out there.

A win win situation. 100% legal. A home run.

$570... I think the call has been answered, and support shown. And at nearly half the price of a SAM440ep with quite a bit more punch, why not indeed!

To counteract the LW piracy that it generated? Because, before then, a VT was required for LW to work at all. Oddly enough, though, LightRave was pirated itself. Then again, I don't know how much good that kind of software did anybody who was legitimate because for it to be useful (before the unbundling happened anyway) you'd have to pirate LW.

Was the unbundled version a version that didn't need a VT (to kill LightRave), or was it the same version, and so still required LightRave?
