SabreMSN for AmigaOS3.x
« on: June 17, 2008, 08:37:29 PM »
The new MUI based MSN client for OS4 which development was started two months ago now reached AmigaOS3.x!

The Alpha 20 supports nearly everything the OS4 version had. It has file transfer, emoticon support, "user is typing" notification, logging and log reloading, sound alerts, utf8 conversion and even nudges (they shake the window just like on Windows).

SabreMSN requires MUI3.8, Nlist.mcc, codesets.library, AmiSSL v3 and gif/png/jpg datatypes to work properly.

Always great to hear that developers are still supporting OS3.x, as there are really so few Amiga users that are able to run OS4.0.

With projects like NatAmi, and  products for classic Amigas like Deneb, software enhancements like EasyNet, OS3.x will still be around for a long time.

Who knows when the legal problems will be over for OS4.0, or if we will ever have new hardware for it again?  I wonder if the OS4 team is even working on it anymore, now that the legal case has gone on for so long and the chances of Hyperion winning are very much in doubt?

Thats one of the last two major bugs I'm trying to work out.

1. It doesnt connect every time when you try to connect. Sometimes you need to retry 3-4 times in a row before it works.

2. The contacts list arent displayed in full (or at all) sometimes. Again, reconnecting 2-3 seems to fix it most of the time.

Once those two issues are solved, I'll probably announce v1.0. At the moment its still in alpha! Well, actually, its probably pretty "beta" now, but I guess it doesnt matter what I name it. :)

@Amigadave

Why would they stop OS4 development because of a lawsuit?.

And no,its not stopped.

@Jahc

well done on SabreMSN , hopefully there will be more people sending in reports of problems or features missing etc.

keep up the good work man.

@jahc

Dang dude!  SERIOUS Props to you............thanks for this!  I cant wait to try it.

You know Amiga is THE machine to really have all these kinds of things for, because they do it for the consoles even..............so all these necessary softwares should be available for Amiga.

The only thing missing now is Yahoo Insatnt Messenger and Google Talk :-)

We even have Gadami :-)
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

The feedback I've received seems relatively evenly split between "it works!" and "it freezes!" .. I'm happy when I hear of it working for another user.

I'll have to do a MorphOS compile over the next few days. I'll rope someone into testing with me later, because I'll be cross compiling, no MOS machine to test it on, just like with WookieChat development :)

Btw guys, if the software works well for you, and you have paypal... donations are always welcome. I hate to hold out the hand here, but we had several bills come in over the last 2-3 weeks and we're struggling to pay off the overdraft and credit card we used to cover them. I wont ask again, as I realise it this type of request is annoying. :)

Thanks guys.

It has been ported, but its command line only unfortunately. I wonder how hard it would be to hack a GUI on top of it? I was able to form a GUI around SDL_Mixer years ago, took about 3 days of disjointed coding to get 99% of the work done. :)

@lempkee,

Why would the OS4 team stop development on their work that they haven't been paid for, might never get paid for, parts of their work might get stolen through the courts by their hated enemy, there continues to be no hardware for their work and the limited past hardware that does run their work is not enough to justify their continued efforts, and maybe they are just fed up with the whole fiasco and legal crap like the rest of us?

I don't want them to stop working on further improvements, but I wonder what their attitude and feelings about continuing their work for little or no payment for their work is like?  Are they confident that Hyperion is going to win the court case, or cases, or do they think that the outcome will not stop them from continuing their work no matter what AInc. does?
