Cloanto Reveals Amiga Forever 2008 Running on One Laptop per Child Hardware

Cloanto Italia srl, Amiga software developers since 1986, are excited to preview details of Amiga Forever 2008 running without modifications on One Laptop per Child hardware.

The new version of Amiga Forever, which is scheduled for imminent release, features several Amiga emulation environments for different platforms (including Windows, Mac and Linux), spanning more than 20 years of history, more than 100 games which are ready to run with a single mouse click, numerous demoscene productions, videos, and much more. I recently reviewed a pre-release version of AF2008 for the next Issue of Amiga Future (Issue 70).  This is a new version of AF and apart from the excellent new Player module it has many new features.

If AF2008 is running under Linux then we've got the "Amiga Laptop" promised by the KX Light initiative introduced in AF2006.  If this is the case then all I can say is well done Cloanto!

OLPC may be destined to die. Intel resigned it's seat on the board of directors, primarily because the OLPC kits use AMD processors. Unfortunately, that result would be quite fitting an Amiga-related project. You think? :-( Still, a computer's a computer, especially in the x86 world. If all the Linuxy bits in AF are open source, getting AF up and running on any hardware supported by Linux shouldn't be difficult.

I have always been a big supporter of Colanto's work on AmigaForever and have personally bought at least 5 versions of their work over the years, including the premier 2 DVD + CDROM 2005 version.  It installed easily on my WinXP Pro laptop, so I have had the pleasure of using an Amiga laptop for a few years already.

I am happy to see that they seem to be working on improving the Amiga emulation hosted on Linux and Mac OSes, as that is another step closer to being able to get rid of Windows for me. (I used to laugh at other Microsoft/Windows haters, but now I am just sick and tired of having to mess with it so much to get just any decent performance from my PC which should be blazingly fast and isn't) :pissed:

I haven't used Intel (the greedy people) for years, AMD run so much cooler and I still remember several P-Pros burning to death at work. :-D

The OCPL hardware is easy enough to get hold of (check ebay)and with two 9 year old daughters I'm very tempted now to get a couple for 10th birthday pressies.

Well done to the AF team and Cloanto as a whole, fantastic work.

Intel evil or not, I always preferred them to AMD as they always seemed more stable and responsive.  I mention this because I think the ASUS Eee PC is far better value than OLPC when you do not need the mesh network, wind-up charging, extra waterproof/rugged construction etc.  

OLPC makes perfect sense for countries where mains power is tricky and computer networks are none-existent.  However the faster CPU, better graphics, double the memory of the Eee is sure to be better for Uae - although I do not recall ever being happy with Uae performance on anything short of a Ghz or two.  That said, I think its far more optimised these days.
