Pop! Puff! Returned to life - Almost

Totally dead.  My 3000/040/50/dkb/Cybergraphx/Mediator/Tower was kaput.  Installed new psu.  Something popped and she was totally dead.

Disassembled everything.  Examined MB with big glass.  Nothing strange or discolored.  Same all boards.

Cleaned everything, connectors, sockets chips, with Electronic Cleaner, then blew dry with Dust Off.

Re-intalled MB, psu, drives, and hd - no boards.  Booted up!  Installed boards, one by one.  Everything worked . . . except the mouse.

Both mouse buttons function but the mouse won't move the cursor.

Thoughts, ideas, or suggestions appreciated.

Sounds like the CIA chips IIRC. Try this. There are 2 CIA chips, try swapping them (with computer off and unplugged of course). See if the mouse works. If it does you know you need to change a CIA.

I called George Tennet.  He hung up on me.

Where are the CIA chips?  What do they look like?  What is the indicia on top of the chip?  Where can I get a diagram?  Where can I get a CIA chip.

The CIA chips are in a pair, near the mouseport usually.  You have 2 of them, so it's not hard to miss.  Their part # is 8520.

Failing that, you could use a utility called JoyMouse, which allows you to use your joystick/pad as a fully functioning mouse (works wonders in paint programs).

This is, of course, assuming the joypad can function correctly. Also, it doesn't solve the main problem, just diverts it... :-(

Only the fire/mouse buttons go through the 8520/CIA chips. The directions are controlled via Denise and a couple other chips on the motherboard... There is a fuse on the motherboard for the joystick ports. It's at F400,  near the back  joystick port. It looks like a resistor without any color bands. You can check this with a voltmeter between pins  7 & 8 on the joystick port. (The middle two on the shorter side). There should be 5volts there.

It could be the power supply.  A problem with one of the +5V lines can cause behavior like this.  Is it a converted AT power supply?  Check to see if you are getting +5V at pin 7 of the joy port.

i'd check the PSU first. as my A4kt used to chew AT PSUs like nobodys business. then i ended up with one PSu for the mainboard and one for the drives.

Did you check the obvious, the mouse?
I had one quit in one direction only
 and one quit when the cat chewed through
the cable.
