Damaged A2/3/4000 keyboard
« on: October 22, 2003, 04:17:41 PM »
I just received a keyboard which I purchased from ebay. It is one of the newer style Commodore keyboards.

The problem is that the Return and Enter keys don't work!! However, every other key works fine. Is it possible to repair such an old keyboard? What should I do  ?

Make the seller refund your purchase.
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

Hmm if it's both Enter keys it sounds like it's not the actual keys but part of the circuitry inside the keyboard, unless it's just a coincidence.

I'd take it apart and see if there's anything obviously wrong with the contact on those keys, after that if you can't find someone to fix it get another broken keyboard (just one with missing keys or something) and make one good keyboard out of the two.

Easy way :

Get a soft lead-pencil (or whatever a "Bleistift" is in english) and
srub it over the contacts on the PCB.

If you don't find a PCB, but one of those foils:
Get an A1200-kbd as spare (used or from Vesalia).

Harder way (if the key is the prob not the pad):
Find a fitting "inside-part" of a key (the tiny plastic with the small
contact-pad).This can either by ripped out of another Ami-KBD or be
found in some Mitsumi/Logitech-KBD. Not for the shaky-handed  ;-)
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

@this_pop_girl

Nah, those (and space) are the most used keys,so they are the ones that
will wear out 1st.

I would guess that the seller used the enter-key as a replacement for
the long-dead return, till that also gave up  :-(

Have a look at this post of mine on this subject.
Also check the Amiga keyboard repair

Last week, I repaired a worn key pad of an A1200, by gluing a PostIt on it, after having sprayed the yellow card with graphite. :-) It works great.

You could sacrifice the tilde~ key or another under-used one, use the rubber key "feet" from an F Key etc.  What I used to do.  Its hard to tell, but these conductive rubber "feet" actually crack (split) sometimes resulting in a failed contact when you press 'em.

Hello Lo (I was going to put Hi Lo, but I thought against it ;-) )

Doesn't "seem" to be cracked, I could be mistaken though. I've looked on the web for Mitsumi keybaords of the Commodore nature layout, but to no avail.

Also C64 key feet work and are more durable, although they won't feel quite the same (Shorter key stroke)

LOL The Gods must be Crazy!

Sorry man, I was talking abit of Greek there.

Yeah, the C64 keystrokes are shorter, I prefer the feel of the Amiga keyboard moreso than the C64 one. You reckon that any PC repairer would be able to repair it?
