Not sure. Though parts of AROS have been used in AmigaOS. So, it would look weird if they did sue now.

Personally, I almost never think of the meaning behind the acronym AROS. To me, it's just a word, so I just keep saying AROS (and not A.R.O.S.).

Maybe you could also consider TOSFKAAROS? (The Operating System Formerly Known As Amiga Replacement/Research Operatin System)

"AROS - The AROS Replacement Operating System"

It's not "Replacement", but "Research".

Are all references to Amiga, Workbench, AmigaOS, etc. going to be dropped from aros.org?

Wherever it makes sense to do so, meaning wherever there might be an abuse of those terms, yes.

Oh, when did the "R" stop meaning Research?

It did not, there was a mistake on the part of the submitter of the news item.

It'll still be the Amiga Research Operating System to me.

So be it, as long as you don't get religious about it. It's just an OS, not even the best one at being one. ;-)

There was a mistake and it was already acknowledged by the submitter.

Think this was a smart move by the AROS team, no sense taking chances.

According to trademark law you may not use the trademark (registered or unregistered) of somebody else to promote your product without approval. Using the Amiga name in the name of the project may give the impression it is approved by Amiga but it's not; it's a project fully standing on it's own.

Well Amiga Inc had contacted AROS in the past and never defended it... and they have to, they might lost it otherwise...

Amiga Inc. can't do anything against Amiga.org. We're a peaceful community desperately trying to date Latino girls in order to improve our Spanish language.

"Are all references to Amiga, Workbench, AmigaOS, etc. going to be dropped from aros.org?"

Referring to these products, and actually using another company's trademark in the name of your product, are two different things.

This is a smart move given that everyone refers to it by the acronym anyway. AROS has its own brand awareness now.

I don't understand the fuss. The !Amiga" name has been pretty meaningless for years now, and keeping it in AROS essentially indicates that AROS is just trying to be a compatible copy of a seriously outdated 1990's operating system.

Even if there were no legal implications, having a name independent of legacy connotations is a positive move for AROS anyway.

Nooo! Don't you see what you have done? This recursive acronym will cause a temporal anomole and destroy the entire universe! What was once AROS now becomes AROSROSROSROSROSROSROS [... and so on until the destruction of the cosmos].

According to U.S. trademark law, you have to defend your trademark or you lose it.

Since Amiga Inc has done nothing to defend its trademark in the past, it has effectively abandoned it.

Oh, but it has.  Remember when Gary Peak when on a rampage about sites (like AO) required to have a (free) license for using any AI's IP?  That will qualify nicely for defending their trademark.  If you want to spend the cash on a team of lawyers attempting to remove AI's trademark(s), go for it.

Speaking of AI and Lawyers, latest chapter can be read here.

Glad AROS is steering clear of that mess.
