AROS to drop Amiga from it's acronym
« on: May 06, 2007, 09:04:48 PM »
Amiga Research Operating System  to become AROS Research Operating System

According to Amiga-News, Aaron Digulla said the name "Amiga" would be deleted from the project name because of the legal steps of Amiga Inc. done against Hyperion.

"AROS - The AROS Research Operating System"

Idiocracy is what this is.
Are all references to Amiga, Workbench, AmigaOS, etc. going to be dropped from aros.org?

Oh, when did the "R" stop meaning Research?

So, AROS is now and AROS replacement?

It'll still be the Amiga Research Operating System to me.

The orginal R stood for "Replacement" and I seem to remember (so it's probably wrong) that AI had taken issue with "Replacement."  Replacement, Research, Amiga, it's all just words to a title, what is important is the code and who owns it.

IIRC, Wayne has a written license to use the above on this site from AI.  Wayne?

smart move i say. best to preempt any possible "legal issues" when it comes to anything remotely related to Amiga Inc.

So.....it's now called the AROS Replacement Operating System, because it's replacing the old AROS (which stood for Amiga Replacement Operationg System)

Aaaaand...to shorten its *NEW* totally legal name, we can STILL use the acronym (A)ROS (R)eplacement (O)perating (S)ystem - AROS. Which DOES NOT directly reference the word Amiga.

we all still know what the "A" in AROS _really_ means ;-)

lol, this is pure genius!

I did a quick check the other day, and it doesn't seem as if Workbench is still an active trademark.  In fact many of the trademarks seem to be in a bit of a mess.

It was a quick check so I may be wrong.

Don't know if Wayne has licence to "Amiga". I just know shutting down the biggest community site would be the best way to piss off the community.

I would put Jay Miner's name in there somewhere, as it's not Amiga that we owe our gratitude to, but Jay Miner, who like Bill Gates, never slept, but unlike Bill gates, used that time for PURE creativity as opposed to ripping off other people's ideas!

RIP.

Writing Replacement instead of research was done out of unconsciousness, as Dammy said it, once the R on AROS stood for replacement

WHY???????

Is this at the request from anyone at AInc.?

I don't understand the reason(s) for this move at all.  Who benefits from this?  Who does it harm or influence?

 :-?
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

My memory is hazy, but did AROS have anything to do with (even being inspired by) the Amiga(D)OS [Replacement|Resource] Project (ARP)?

I seem to recall it was around a long time before, but didn't hear much more about it, apart from the commonly used arp.library before asl.library came along.

Smart move, IMO. Why flirt with litigation?

Not sure. Though parts of AROS have been used in AmigaOS. So, it would look weird if they did sue now.
