Using Kickstart 3.1 rom chips...
« on: December 07, 2002, 02:04:13 PM »
Let me tell you a story.

My Towered A1200 died a few weeks ago complete with OS3.9 and 3.1 roms.  This I'm not too bothered about as I've ordered an AmigaOneXE-G4 and I thought I'd just use UAE to run all my old legacy software.

One hitch though, I forgot that I'd need a rom image for UAE.
Now, as my A1200 is dead, I can't get an image of the 3.1 rom so I'm going to order a second hand A1200 from e-bay.
Next problem is that I've already sold the accelerator, HD, SD/FF and tower, so I won't be able to install OS3.9.

Can I just put the 3.1 roms in the working A1200 and grab the image or do I need workbench 3.1 as well?
I also have a CDTV so I'm o.k. for 1.3 roms.

Can anyone give me advice for extracting the roms?

Sorry for all the questions, thanks in advance.

Hi,

You can use transrom to make that rom file.  Maybe boot with a disk with transrom on it and then grab a copy to the disk. Should work.

So it should be fine then to install the 3.1 roms when if I only have the workbench 3.01 disks then?

I take it transrom comes with the UAE package?

So i'd have to move the transrom utility to a dos disk (to get it off the AmigaOne) and then dump the rom image to a dos formatted disk and bring that image back to the AmigaOne.  Linux can format disk in dos mode, can't it?

I take it then, that I can't dump a rom image from the 1.3 rom in the CDTV seeing as 1.3 doesn't have cross dos?

Well, you need a Amiga 1200 (or any other Amiga wich can have the roms in it you want to grab) and then have the roms in it, then boot with a bootable Amiga disk with transrom (comes with the emulator) and run the program that will write the image to a file on the disk.

But you need to run crossdos to write it to a "pc" (yuk) floppy.

Can you get a copy from someone else if you have the roms yourself but cannot get the romfile? Anyone?

@Odin

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction mate :-)

Now all I have to do is learn how to use Linux (never used it, suppose now is as good as time as any to learn) and try and get UAE running (again - never used it).
