First, Welcome to Amiga.org! :)

To answer your question. Its a big hard to try not to spend as much to get a good amiga going on.  I know the accel card is a first and must have. A fair amount of memory and a good harddrive will suit you good.  Most external PC modems will work for dialing up to the internet.  To be specific to what you want to spend is a factor on what you can get for your Amiga 1200.

Sounding reasonable, so far...

but i want a ppc.

This is stretching the budget, but not impossible, with the A1200.  The PPC accelerators are a lot cheaper for 1200 than for an A4000.  You'll probably need an upgraded power supply and some other bits and pieces, though, as well...  I'd guess you've already busted over your budget.

a voodo card

This is meaning you need a tower case, upgraded power supply, and a Mediator.  The system by this point is probably going to at least double your $300 budget....

Probably... The complete systems sell for quite a bit cheaper than their parts.  You're still not going to find an Amiga of the spec you're looking for at the $300 range... Probably more in the $500-$700 range.

Everyone uses commodity hard drives and RAM.  They are the cheap and easy parts of the system.  It's the PPC accelerator and PCI bus that are going to cost you.

The Amiga hardware is older... But it's rare, and still in demand by both users and collectors.  It's held it's value incredibly well.  Really an oddity in the computer world.

To pablotincho:

Then buy yourself an Amiga 2500 from eBay.  It is a much higher quality, better built machine then the Amiga 1200.  I myself am very proud of my own Amiga 2500.  You can pick up an Amiga 2500 from eBay for less then $200.00.  Then you would have a computer built like a German Tiger-Tank, instead of some plastic piece of crap built like a toy!  pablotincho, trust me, you will love the FlagShip of all Amiga computers- The Commodore Amiga 2000 Series.     :-D

Ow please stop it already with your pro 2000 campaine, we all know how you feel so lay off! The 2500 can hardly do what he is asking for... you won't find any PCI  or PPC for the A2000 model and AGA is a bonus on the A1200 side. What casing the Amiga is in have nothing to do with this project obviously since he is aiming for a tower.

PPC will probably cost you around 120$ for the 040 model card. An alternative to Mediator is to get hold of a true Z3 bussboard and use a PrometheusPCI instead. It might not be as professional looking but it will probably be cheaper and get you more ports, still quite expencive though in the 150$ region I suppose. One can always buy a fat PC tower cheap and try put the Amiga inside instead of buying the overpriced Amigatowers (30$). Then there is all the other things like memory, harddrive, the PCI graphiccard, ethernetcard that you can take from (in some case older) PC's.

Whats with you and your A2500, doommaster? Sure, it´s not all plastic covers on it, but besides that, it´s inferior to a A1200 in just about every aspect... :)

300? for 350 you could get a Peg2 and use your voodoo card in that!, (ok enough of that)

A2000 was probably the best amiga model if you take quality, and timeframe into account, Commodore didnt build an A4000 with nearly the same quality they did the A2000, the 2000's are my favorite Amiga for that reason, built good quality and many upgrades! although not as functional as a A1200 or A4000 but  NONE of these systems are very functional by todays standerds...so why bother spending a fortune on one?

I grew up on an A1200 so I'm sentimental to that model somewhat, but really? A2000 with a GVP Spectrum and an 030 is fine to toy around with.

I agree with DoomMaster pretty much, A2500 for 200.00 off ebay is a fine little system to play with.

I ripped the guts out of a 2000, threw them in the dustbin and put an A1200 mobo inside with a 68040 and keyboard addaptor, even added a reset switch.
Best 2000 I've ever used.

You can forget about getting all the parts you mentioned for just $ 300,--. Your only chance to get it relatively cheap is buy it secondhand (e-bay, for example). Even then, you will not get it for the amount of money you want to spend on it.

Anyway, your best bet is to buy a complete system. If you buy it bit by bit (like I do), you will probably have exactly the parts you want, but it's gonna cost you at least 4 times as much...
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

Dude! Bargain of the century i got exactly a year ago and was responsible for getting me back on the Amiga scene after a 6 year absence:

Amiga 1200T Power Tower
Blizzard 1260 +32meg Ram
2 Gig Hard Drive
Floppy Disk drive and 32x CD Rom Drive - Both internal
IDE 4 Way Buffered Controller + IDE Fix 97 registered
3.1 Roms + Amiga OS 3.5
Silver Surfer Fast Serial Socket + IBrowse 1 and Termite TCP - All registered
Kerboard, mouse and CD32 Competition Pro joypad

I got all this for only £75! And i think i got it from the classified section of this site, or Amiga World i think! :-)

My advice to you would be to have a good hunt around here and Amiga World and not forgetting Amibench and Ebay before you buy! :-)

Regards,

Hello! Unfortunately for $300 you can throw the idea of building the system yourself out the window. Your only chanvce would be to watch eBay for a complete system and bid up to $300. Even then your chances are slim of winning the auction. :-(

Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

@DoomMaster

YOU ARE WRONG! Have you ever thought that maybe the reason why Amiga 2000/2500 sell less than $200 day in day out is because they are no longer up for the job anymore, apart from playing games, or if you can upgrade it to the max. In other words no-one wants them! I bet you won't find an Amiga 2000/2500 as good as mine for only £75! :-) Not even i will repeat that brilliant feat again!
