Problems installing IBM HD. Help needed...
« on: October 16, 2003, 12:15:00 AM »
Hi,

I'm trying to install an 2,5" IBM Travelstar DADA-26480 6.49 GB harddrive in my A1200D. Some how I can't get it installed.

This is what I have done. I powered up the computer and the drive starts spinning. I then load WB and HDToolBox (I even tried HDInstTools from Aminet). HDToolBox recognises the drive and I can partion the disk, but when I try to save my changes it says "-1 on write".

I even tried only to create a partion on the first 50 MB of the drive and get Workbench3.0 installed on it, but I can't get the drive to show up on my WB after a reset.

I also tried SFS as filesystem, I have used HDToolBox, AQ ToolBox and HDInstTools to prep the drive, but all progs hangs when I'm trying to save changes to drive. I can hear the drive writing something, but a requester pops up saying that it can't write my settings to the drive :-(

Is the hdd broken, or is there something about installing 2,5" hdds I'm not aware of?

There have been lots of problems reported with IBM hard drives and Amigas. You might need Kick 3.1. Can you get any of the 4Gb+ utilities installed before setting up the drive?

ummm.... I tried everything you tried and then some
on a 4.2 gig 3 1/2 in.  IBM drive......(used)
end result ...... I pitched it and swore I would NEVER
have another IBM drive.
But that was just my experience ..
Hope you have better luck.

Hmmm, maybe the drive is harmed? I have a 15 gig
IBM Travelstar, and it's *very* quiet and works
well. I did have problems with erroneous
size values in HDToolbox, but I believe this
is common with the 1200 IDE.

IBM notebook drives are high quality products,
and there is no relation between them and the
infamous "DeathStars", so I find it strange
that you should be having problems. In any
case I hope you get it working.

My thought was that the drive is broken becuase there are propably many similarities between installing a 9.1 GB SCSI hdd and a 6.5 GB IDE hdd.

I tried installing SFS and got it installed but still with the same result; I can't save my changes. I have only tried to install it on a Kick3.0 machine, but what difference should Kick3.1 do? It still has the 4+ GB barrier. Or am I wrong? It does here anyway.

I got the drive for free, and it came with the mailman, so mayby it has hads some bumps on its way. Mayby it's the reason that it is broken.
