Businessweek.com quote : "Stocks moved higher Monday as investors extended last week's rally and pushed Apple Computer Inc. higher on a report that it was in talks about using Intel Corp. microprocessors in the Macintosh computer line."

What many people dont seem to realise is that "apple planning to use intel chips" could just mean the plan to use Intel's processors for their networking gear or ipod or perhaps xscale cpu's for a new apple pda.

They will never move OS X over to an alien chip. It would be like
taking a PC now and moving over to PPC. Nothing would work and every
app would need to be writen over again from scratch. Dont hold your
breath. This comes up every year and it never happens.

You also have to remember that Intel makes a zillion other chips other than the Pentium line, some quite good.  It's entirely possible that Apple could be talking to Intel to source one of there excellent NIC chipsets, RISC processors, etc.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Oh PLEASE come on people, do you forget history or what.. Steve Jobs moved the NeXT boxes from Motorola over to Intel back in the 486 days..

Steve Jobs is crazy like a fox.  Just because he's at Apple doesn't mean he won't do it again.. Watching what he's done with the new OS looks just like his business plan with NeXT.. This time it could actually work because it is Apple afterall..

NeXTStep and OS X has quite a bit in common with it's *nix style underpinnings and Darwin already runs on x86.. You can download it and install it today.. So never say never. A lot of original NeXT Cube machines, with 68030s never got over the "white next boxes" which were intel 486s.

It would only fit if they did it to gain marketshare, and tip windows off the throne with their OS.. I am sure intel has a similar chip to the AMD64 in the works..

It would be fitting irony since the only "hardware" microsoft will be making will be the Xbox 360 which is moving to a PowerPC chipset..

ARM-processors for a new Ipod is what directly pops up in my mind.
Then again there is that rumored tablet/handheld.....
Apple did it right the first time, bring back the Newton!

I'm thinking the XScale CPU... the iPod already uses an ARM based chip.. the Apple Newton used a StrongARM chip...

So my bet is on Apple using the Xscale for a new mobile device.

Apple have no reason to go x86 on the desktop, there is far too much software inveestment in the PPC... unless some clever chap at apple has designed a special "user mode" PPC Jit to sit on top of an x86-64 comple of darwin that has no mmu issues... only then would a move to the x86 be worthwhile.

It could also mean that Apple could be licensing the PPC to Intel to produce as well.  Don't forget that Intel does offer sourcing, that is they produce chips for other companies.  And as stated above, it could also be discussions over the XScale for a haldheld or the iPod, or for networking chips, system controllers, etc.  Shoot, this could mean 1000 other things as well.

I don't think it is Apple's to license.

The chip in the story is not the P4 or its 64bit variant, but the Itainium chip.  And it is Mac/OSX that will be using it.  Read the story and do a google search.

Apple will continue the PPC Mac for awhile and slowly transition over to the Itainium line.

or they could be entering the clone business as a separate division from the Mac to expand their product line...

There is a large Intel plant is only a few miles from my house.  It's the former Alpha chip manufacturing facility originally built by Digital (they make Pentiums there now...sobb).  I'll let you know if I see Steve Jobs' entourage.
