How do I clean a Floppy drive??
« on: October 14, 2003, 04:30:56 PM »
How do I go about cleaning a floppy drive??

I was thinking of getting a can of 'Tuner Cleaner'
and just hosing it out and then a dot of 'WD40'
on the things that move.

Any help here??

Buy a diskcleaner at your computer store.

Cleaning out a floppy disk drive!?!?! Interesting!  :-)

@lempkee

If i was to insert an Amiga 4000 HD floppy disk drive then would i need to install any adaptors? Or would i just connect it to where the DD floppy disk drive used to be?

Where could one get these Amiga 4000 HD floppy disk drives?!  :-D

WD-40 probably isn't a good idea.

Use "compressed air" to get rid of dust and then a cleaning diskette for the read/write head.

If you can't find a cleaning diskette, use isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip, but be careful not to bend the heads out of alignment.

cu_Amiga: any hdfloppy from an amiga4000 040 works sraight off in your a1200 .

sadly only a4000 040 models has this so its kinda hard to find, anyway no adapters needed and it  fits like a glove :D

jope has given the correct method, follow those instructions and every thing should be fine. teflon grease would work well on moving parts, use a Qtip to apply.

Note the pin-switch on the opposite side for the write-protected detection (right side): If this little pin is bent or stuck then you will have a no-disk inserted error, or read/write errors while the disk is in the drive.

I bought myself a floppy-cleaning kit for the A4000 internal drive.

The "Disk Drive Head Cleaner Kit" that I have, was the last one left over on a computer store in Athens (I`ve ordered this specific product for 3.5" drives to my parents  -not to be confused by the CD cleaner kits widely known and found on any computer/music store- ).

It seems that is easier this time to buy a new floppy drive than to find a floppy cleaner kit !! The average PC user, changes the whole setup after a certain period of time.

My A4000 HD floppy drive is not quite the same as the "over the counter" PC-drives, and it has more or less 10 years on its back so it needs maintenance.

The Kit contains an Isopropyl Alcohol bottle, and a floppy cleaning diskette (without the metal slide cover, and the magnetic disk is substituted by a porous white cloth material -you have to apply a few drops of cleaning liquid on the underside of the diskette, before inserting it into the drive- ).

Don't use WD-40 as said before though. It washes lubricants away, so if you use it you will have to re-apply lubricant. I also like the teflon based ones for drives etc.
Oh yeah, its the same on your car ! If you use WD-40 like I did on my rear brakes one year for an MOT (UK car safety test) you will find everything has rusted twice as bad the next year ! Looobricate !!
Good advice ppl :-)

There is a program called Scrub on Aminet
that will spin a cleaning disk for you.

Here is another, but have not used it:

 The best way it to replace it with a new Amiga.

 :-D

Seriously though, but a drive cleaning kit and run it through.
