Soms3d Alpha Engine Relased!
« on: November 02, 2004, 05:30:11 PM »
The Anime Development for Amiga Team relased a AlphaDemo of their Silenthill like PPC game Soms3d.  It Requires a PPC/Warpos(Compatible) System and a 3d Graphics card with Warp3d(Compatible).

http://www.intuitionbase.com/soms3d/
--
Notice:
This is a Pre Alpha demo of our soms3d GFX Engine! All you can do at this time is run around and look at the nice gfx ;). There are a lot of things we have to do/optimize at this time.
Oh, and DONT FORGET: Play this Game in the DARK!

TASKS WHICH NEED TO BE DISABLED:
*Screenswitch

Requirements:
You need a PPC processor, a 3D gaphicscard, WarpOS(Compatible), AHI and a minimum of 64MB ram.

Works on:
Bvision, CBision, Voodoo3, Voodoo5

Won't work on:
Cybervision64 3d, Voodoo4(Morphos only(?))

Not tested yet:
Radeon xxxx

Usage:
Start soms-engine, choose a start level.
You can change between 3 Levels in-game by pressing F1 = Outside, F2 = Darkhouse, F3 = The Room.
If you want to alter the configuration (such as mouse speed or resolution eca), edit the Config.cgf file.

Keys:
Cursorkeys = stear
F10 = screenshot
Mouse = look around
esc = quit
shift = speedrun
IF some texture errors or Zbuffer errors occur, free up more memory!

BUGS:
A bit to quiet SFX, rise your Volume!
Sometimes the engine Freezes without a reason or it crashs while changing the levels.
In that case you can use the program wosdb (look in the main dir) like this "wosdb soms-engine"
A window will appear where it asks you to type in something. Type g and press return. After that the engine starts. The next time the engine crashes wosdb will print out some debug infos. Please send them to us ([12]sylvio.k@gmx.de[0]) with your systemconfig and a description of when and where the error occurs.
You also can take a Screenshot (Screenshot.ppm)by pressing F10 and send it to us (please pack with lha, lzx, zip or something else.)

I’m very sorry, but I still just can’t bring myself to say anything nice about this attempt at an Amiga game.
While I realize that it in an unfinished state, there’s nothing on the site to give any hope that the game can achieve its goal of competing with even a PS One game, let alone any modern Silent Hill/Fatal Frame type games.  Why not targt a more diable engine, like an isometric "Diablo-style" engine?

I don't see the harm in them trying. It's by trying hard you become better. Not everyone can make an outstanding game on the first try and if everyone who tries are told they have no talent and should quit who knows what wonderful games we would be missing in the future?

@ FastRobPlus

Have you ever written a better engine? Or designed better models/textures? Or made a website in a foreign language? No? Then you should maybe stick to playing with your Micro$oft console..

Yes, actually.  Korean and Japanese:

But why do you call me out on this?  Becuse I'm American and you assume I've never worked as a developer, or speak a language ohter than English?  Why do you try and make this thread about me at all?  Becuse you see the Xbox avatar and assume I'm just trolling?

Hmm... Not sure 'cause that's really subjective.  The last stuff I did where I actually rendered out images and textures was back in the mid-1990s.  Check out the Automap Road Atlas 4 demo on the Windows 95 CD.

But why the personal attack?  Are you trying to prove that as a console gamer, I can't see some screenshots and if a game is likely to live up to it's hype?

I see a lot of benefit in the excercise of creating a game.  I just don't see the point promising a Silent Hill-like game for Amiga, if it's in this state.

It is a fuc*ing alpha!! it is not supposed to be flawless in such a early state.. Sorry to say it, but you sound like a dic*head FastRobPlus.

Pretty low of you to bash someones hard work like this on a public forum.
Why not maybe mail the developers and give some suggestions for improvement or maybe even give a hand to help them instead??

this is just childish.

So you work as a support guy for microsoft, and you don't like these guys because they have anti m$ stuff on their site?
Or do you really mean these guys are wack because their spare time project on a 10 year old computer  doesn't look as good as microsofts multi million dollar games?

I didn't mean this as a personal attack. I am also a console gamer (ps2) and I enjoy new games with their stunning 3D graphics just as much as you. But especially as you're involveld in the games business you should know that todays games are made by big companys with lots of people working on it and a budget you can compare to hollywood movies. SOMS is (IIRC) an effort of 3 or 4 people who work in their spare time, and I assume(I dont want to speak for them) they do this mostly because they love the amiga.
My only problem was that I didn't get your point. You made a professional looking website for microsoft without errors, true, but thats your job. Youre expected to deliver professional work. Laughing or complaining about amateures is not very professional imho. Its like professional soccer or basketball players would complain about their amateur colleagues.

@rayt

Go to Atari-age and you'll see pointers to pages where individuals are pouring thier hearts into designing games for computers far older than just 10 years, so no, I think that's great.

I agree with the comment that there's no harm, and a lot of good in an exercise such as this, but it really seems overly ambitious, given what we see in each release they show us.

@ rob

I understand that you indentify yourself with the company you work for. But I think you are exaggerating a bit. If you feel personally insulted by other content of their website, don't visit it again, but its kind of unfair to run down this project because of personal feelings. And you can't seriously believe they make this game for the amiga because they hate windows or because they think that amiga can become mainstream again..
To stay on topic, I just checked the demo.. I like the moving fog effects, and considering its only a pre alpha version, this could be a nice game one day.. and now I'm off playing San Andreas  :-D

Actually, I do find the game to be overly ambitious given the apparent talent level, and did say what I honestly think of it. I'm usually much more tactful, but in this case, I've made an exception out of protest to thier site design, which may be a personal opinion.  It is at least more navigable than it used to be. But you never know, maybe they could use some honest oppinion.  I don't think "cool moving fog, then I went and played GTA" is all that helpful.

If you are interested in seeing this game come to light and actually be good, I'd bash on it they way they reccomend and speak your thoughts aloud with an audio recorder running while you play.  Then transpose your observations to a doc and send that to the team.

So i think i also have to say something ;)
well ofcourse our site is different, and we all know that humans dont like difference.
I think FastRobPlus expected to see a textlink based momochrom homepage without big GFX and so on...maybe to underline his imagination that amiga users are not that talented or got that highpower html tools like M$ do.
But it also could be that he forget to "SWITCH ON JAVASCRIPT!", like it is said on the mainpage and wonder why nothing really works;)
