What's the best way to get files from a PC to an A600?
« on: October 14, 2003, 07:52:43 AM »
I have an A600 that I want to get files across from my PC. It is running WB1.3, and has virtually no software. Any ideas?

What I want to know is why is your A600 running OS1.3? :-o

The first thing you should do is construct a NULL modem cable.

From memory, using 25pin D connectors it's pin2-3, 3-2, and 7-7. (Threre are more pins, for differenet types of software transfer protocols)

Then, there is a program which I think you should find on Aminet that will help transfer the files. I can't remember the name, but somebody here should be able to help.
(i think its pc2amiga or somthing)

Get a newer Workbench 2.0/3.0 and you can use
crossdos which allows you to read 720k PC floppy
disks on your Amiga.
Then you can easily copy smaller files or split
bigger ones to transfer them.

That would be Workbench 2.1 or better, if you're talking about the included crossdos.

There is a crossdos version that works on 1.3 too, but I don't know where you can find it legally. (if that matters to the original poster)

The stand alone crossdos worked on WB1.3
I believe. But A600 was released with 2.0
or 2.1 was it not?
Better to get the newer OS, much better I think.

It works with any OS, but of course the later versions are better..

The first A600s came with 2.04 and the later revisions with 2.05

Then again, fat95 is free free free and available from Aminet.. If the OP's A600 has the 2.0x ROM (the OP never mentioned that very clearly), then it's plug 'n play.

The A600 was never sold with 1.3. There are no 1.3 kickstart ROMs that support the onboard IDE or PCMCIA for starters.

But it can be retrofitted..

I guess (judging by the other posts made) that the OP sis running 2.0x with WB1.3 installed on the HDD.

Fastest way would be to install 2.0ROM's if you're sure that's not what you got, plug in a CD to the A600 and then burn the stuff onto a CDR and then read the data on the A600. Might not be the fastest way to swap 5K of data but if it's several 100Mb then I'm not sure you want to nullmodem it over. Sure Fat95 is an alternative (found on aminet) if you're more into swapping HD's. ;-)

My A600 have a romswitch and both ROM2.05 and 1.3... sweeet. :-D

Get hold of AExplorer from Cloanto and then you can transfer files from PC to Amiga via a nice User i/f.
Does not require any additional s/w on Amiga side!

For a cheap and fast transfer read the following URL:
http://amiga.nvg.org/warlock/wartrans/

I use SAMBA through magPLIP:
PC <-Ethernet-> A4000 <-magPLIP-> A600

This config provides me with INet access for my A600 also.

P.S.1 PLIP can be used with a PC-Linux box also (the A600 connects directly to it -parallel port- ), although it's for an old kernel (anyone tried this on a new kernel version?)

P.S.2 Needed PLIP support for NetBSD desperately !!!

The easiest way would be using crossdos to read pc formated floppy disks, but it is only included in wb 2.05/2.1 as far as i know, it was not included on my wb 2.04 atleast...

The other way is to transfer the files using a serial cable, but that is often very slow.

I believe. But A600 was released with 2.0

mine had 2.04 or something like that, which did not have crossdos  :-(  But i guess it depends on which model of the a600..
