Main AmiNet Site Gone, Possibly For Good
« on: September 26, 2004, 02:51:16 AM »
It looks like the main AmiNet site is gone, perhaps for good now.  Many if not all the other US sites also appear to be gone,  and perhaps two or three sites (uk, se, cz) in the official aminet site list mirrored at the European site list.  It's not looking promising here.....can we as a community do anything about this "AmiNet rot" ?

Here is the notice from the main AmiNet site: (URL : http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WUArchive has suffered a RAID failure, it's nStor controller died. The disks may get recycled for another use.

This is what's available

A replacement machine has been ordered, it will be the last half of October before it's back.

WUArchive has been around for a long time, and evolved through several hardware configurations and owners.

It's content will be changing, some old stuff will remain, other chunks will go. For items to remain, they will require a sponsor from here at Washington University. A written statement of benefit maybe required. We are leaning toward K-12 outreach, and open source mirrors for wustl.edu.

If you have ideas please contact Allen Rueter 314/935-6429 or Dr. Bill Smart in the media and machines lab, 5-4749.

Thanks for your patience.

I have checked the current status of the sites as of Sep 26, 2004, based on the list of aminet mirrors on ftp.unina.it, and here is what I found :

USA         us.aminet.net    Complete mirror, full WWW support   (gone)
Germany     de.aminet.net    Complete mirror, full WWW support   (working)
UK          uk.aminet.net    Complete mirror, full WWW support   (gone)
Italy       it.aminet.net    Complete mirror, full WWW support   (working)
Sweden      se.aminet.net    Complete mirror, full WWW support   (gone)
Norway      no.aminet.net    Complete mirror, full WWW support   (working)
Czech Rep.  cz.aminet.net    Complete mirror, full WWW support   (gone)
USA         us2.aminet.net   Complete mirror, full WWW support   (gone)
Germany     de3.aminet.net   Complete mirror, custom WWW support (working)
Germany     de5.aminet.net   Partial mirror, partial WWW support (working)
Germany     de7.aminet.net   Partial mirror, partial WWW support (gone)

With the exception of the main US mirror, I think "gone" is too strong a choice of words for the other servers being down. Probably just routine server trouble. Has another virus been spreading?

Give it a few days, I expect all will be back to normal soon enough.

I hope you're right, but I suspect perhaps not.  If it were just one or two sites, I'd agree, but there are quite a few.  I of course do not know AmiNet's fate, but I am concerned to see this kind of thing.

Most mirrors should be still up, where they were ever up before (a lot of mirroring services have been shutting down lately which is sad).

What is unfortunate is if the DNS for aminet.net domain was hosted at WUarchive.. if so all the nice URLs for the mirrors will drop off the planet eventually but not because of failure.

I would basically prompt whoever looks after Aminet now to reorganise and reconfirm all the mirrors and pick one to act as the master. No doubt this would end up being the Paderborn mirror..

How many times has washing university ftp service gone down over the years. I don't mean to be harsh but they seem really incompetent at running a public ftp service. Aminet main site moved at some point to paderborn didnt it? I think it should have stayed there too.

*grumble*

For many years I have been dependent on Aminet site for updates, utilities, libraries and more.  I really hate to see that site go.  I would contribute some cash if I have to.  I REALLY don't want to see that site go down.  Make backups of data if you have to.

I think this could shatter the little bit left of the amiga community  :-( I truly hope it wont be gone for good.

Is really sad to see what was once the biggest software archive rot away..

It seems like the DNS is gone.
SUNET's Aminet mirror is still on-line.

DNS gone? Not here it isn't. Infact www.aminet.net is now pointing at the Paderborn mirror. I wouldn't panic just yet.

Awhile ago they had a contest to guess when they would reach 30 GB. So, I'd say alittle bigger than that.
