WookieChat 1.2 released
« on: July 14, 2004, 05:36:13 AM »
WookieChat is a new IRC client for Amiga's and compatibles.

I havent fixed the enforcer hits yet, and I'm about to go on holiday for the next month, so I wanted to get what I've done (up until now) out there for people to use.

Download it from the usual place.. WookieChat Homepage

Changes 1.2
-----------
- Installation script added
- "Perform on connect" support added. So you can join channels, register with nickserv, etc,
automatically when you connect to a server. Edit the Group entry to change your connect script.
- Support added for server passwords
- No longer crashes when you are missing any of the three MUI custom classes that WookieChat requires. It will give an error message instead.
- You can now /part channels and close private message (query windows) tabs by clicking the X button in the top left hand corner.
- If you try to use a command that isnt yet supported, the "/" prefix in the line you typed will be removed and the rest of the line will be sent to the server. /mode and /nickserv now work because of this. This might help with future IRC developments too.. i.e. when new commands become available on networks, the client doesnt have to be updated to support them.
- Bug fix: when you were disconnected from IRC by either the server or by typing /quit, the program would go into a never ending loop locking up the program. fixed.
- Bug fix: When a server name was too big for its button, it created weird problems. Now when a server name is too long, the string is restricted to 10 characters. So hopefully multiple server support works better now.
- Bug fix: Can connect to the Galaxynet network fine now.
- Bug fix: when connecting to a server in a new tab, sometimes the previous tab you were in wouldnt change its selected state to FALSE.
- Bug fix: No longer crashes if you load WookieChat without first loading a TCP/IP stack. When you attempt to connect to a server, it loads bsdsocket.library if it hasnt been already, and if it fails it gives an error message.
- Change: Nicklist listviews are a fixed size now, so when the window is small, you can still see the status symbols to the left of peoples nicks

May I ask a question?
What's for this new irc client? :-? There is at least one, AmiRC, that works just excellent! What are advantages of this new one?

This one can have multiple servers in the one window, supports halfops, has a nice "preform on connect" option, and will eventually be recompiled for OS4... ppc-native baby!

-Edit- oh and best of all, its free. :) no disconnection every 30 minutes..

Well... Why do you think recompilation for OS4 (or morphos) is worth doing it? IRC client is certainly not CPU-consuming application, so by recompiling under PPC there will be absolutely no gain in speed.

While AmIRC is a fantastic IRC client and easily the best on Amiga, it's still good to see another client in develepment.
AmIRC updates seemed to have dryed up so perhaps in time you can challenge the mighty. ;-)

Some of us do appreciate your efforts jahc

Fanks.

I dont know if it will ever surpass AmIRC, but its something reasonably good and free for people to use anyway.

Help me understand this...you're going on holiday for a month without your computer and without the decire to program WookieChat?

What planet are you from?

Sincerely,

-Kenneth Straarup.

PS: as you mention, the fact that it's free is by far its most appealing feature. I know we need to support developers and buy software and what not, but it quickæy becomes expensive when you need to pay for everything you want to use. Kind of like in the mac world (shudder).

Anyways, great initiative. May I perhaps suggest that you if you someday want to charge money for your program (which is fair enough) will leave an older feature-starved free version?

Have you ever tried using AmIRC but being on multiple servers? It's impossible! You need to open multiple instances, you have windows all over the place, and you never know to what window output from ARexx scripts will go. The Amiga needs an IRC client that can handle multiserver, jahc is doing one, and good luck to him.

Heh, obviously you've never tried checksumming a 700 MB file you've resumed a DCC on. 68k (and 68k emulation) just don't cut it.

How nice... Somebody decides to do something productive (and free) for the tiny Amiga community and people thank the guy with negative feedback... What planet are you negative people from?

The Amiga community needs to look after its developers, regardless of whether similar applications already exist.

WookieChat may or may not be better than Amirc, but it is still in development, and already has nice features over Amirc, which I am sure will continue to grow as development continues.  What more, its free!  How about encouraging the developer for his good work, eh?

Uhm... Are we feeling a bit jumpy? Do I have to overplaster my posts with smileys to have them not taken as death threats or worse?

I know sarcasm can be hard to interpret via text, but I would have thought that one was pretty obvious. I'll remember to put smileys everywhere next time.

Sincerely,

-Kenneth Straarup.
