Cassini-Huygens
« on: July 04, 2004, 04:21:52 PM »
Of general interest to some of our members, the European-American Cassini-Huygens spacecraft captured some photos from Saturn and one of it's moons (Titan) recently.

The pictures can be watched here and here.

a raw image preview of the titan flyby :

A section of my departent has an instrument on Cassini (a magnetic-field detector), so everyone was celebrating come thursday.

They began work in 1990. And now they have the coming 6 years or so to receive data; data which will likely take another six years to fully analyze... 26 years of those people's lifes, and all for the benefit of increasing the knowledge of mankind. That's dedication.

Cheers to them! They deserve it.

@SlimJim

Here's hoping all goes as planned :hammer:

It's gotta be devastating when one of these missions fails, so far so good. Maybe we'll see a manned mission within our lifetime?

I personally hope that they'll send that submergable probe to Europa soon.
It would be cool to see underwater images from another planet! :-)

Good luck to the scientists at the Institute of space physics (I assume) in Uppsala, BTW! :pint:
