OpenBeos: New name Haiku
« on: June 20, 2004, 07:29:28 PM »
Just when you thought that developments in the Amiga community couldn't get more bizarre - OpenBeos form a 'strategic alliance'(does this kinda talk ring bells!) with a fish take-away and restyle themselves 'HAIKU'.

You can read more about this at http://www.openbeos.org/

Weird! A less evocative or catchy name would be hard to imagine.

I don't think the sushi site is really the same Haiku Inc, as the new OpenBeOS partner.  The link was probably a joke, much like our own spanish "Amiga" lesbians.

But, I agree with Mr. Hoggett --  It's tough to keep coming up with names this bad.  Though, I still don't think it's as bad as "Linspire," which instantly caused me to hurl my lunch -- much like eating bad sushi.  ;-)

Some related info, haiku is a japanese poem form that occured within BeOS as a sort of error messages. So it´s not that far fetched actually.

Yup, but 5/7/5 syllables, not words.

Wait a second.

HAIKU is merely the name of the company and the standard specifications that BEUNITED are currently issuing that will/may/should be applied to open source BEOS projects. Its not the new name of the OS, except maybe for the version that the HAIKU company are making.

It has no more relevance to the FOSS BEOS projects than KMOS might have on AROS if they were indeed speaking to eachother to create a compatable platform, which they aren't. Errr...maybe that doesn't make sense.

Nope - it's definitely the new name for OpenBeos...

Taken from the official OpenBeos site.

"All kidding aside, the new name is indeed Haiku. BeGroovy and BeOSJournal have all of the news."

Anyone fancy some sushi?

Haiku-OS is the new name of the project formerly known as OpenBeOS. Haiku-OS will also be used as the reference platform for any other OSBOS (Open Source BeOS) project, although it will not represent a standard in itself.

I thought that was quite clear.

I still think Haiku is a particularly silly name to adopt, whatever the inside joke about it might have been.

The again, it's the season for silly decisions. OpenBeOS is Haiku-OS, SkyOS going commercial...

Hmmmm...I guess I was wrong because I thought it was just too stupid to be true.

Jeez....Its like renaming AROS to BoingOS or GuruOS or something else stupid. Actually, even they sound better.

IMHO Haiku poems are annoying and cryptic. If I am not mistaken I saw someone write that error messages in BEOS were sometimes written as Haiku. Great...rename the OS to a cryptic form of poetry.

Everyone is just putting on a fake grin and saying its ok, its ok, don't panic, this isn't that bad, this isn't that bad, its relevant, its relevant, I swear!!! The name still SUX though!!!!
Can you think of a worse name?
Even four letter words would be preferable.
Tell me its a codename only.....please...people can't be this inept. You can't tell me that there is a single person out there that would not have rathered it was named something else.

Oh well. What do I care.

Perhaps they should rename ALL operating systems after forms of poetry:

Limerix
Windows Xtra Poetic

etc.

Hell I never even liked the term "Operating System"

Why can't we just use "Master Control Program" like back in the Tron days? :-)
