CAPS user library available for linux (ppc and i686)
« on: February 17, 2004, 11:44:10 AM »
C.A.P.S., the Classic Amiga Preservation Society, ported the user library to Linux (i686 and PPC versions).

Now lets pray that M. Rich Drummond will add support for it in next uae ports.

From AW.net under latest uae port 0.8.23

Do you have plan to support .ipf too

I talked to one of the chaps at the CAPS project regarding IPF support, and that should be possible on x86 Linux as soon as they finish a Linux port of the CAPS plug-in. It's a closed source, binary-only plug-in, so I can't do anything until they do. (There's apparently already a 68k Amiga version, so I may look at implementing support for that first).

So now that the user library is available, M. Drummond might be able to add support for it.

I'm stumped on this one.  I read through the "user library" info pages and couldn't find what it was other than an extension to support gaming in UAE.  Can someone hit me upside the head with a clue-by-four?

@Kent:

CAPS is about archiving software (i.e. games) that comes on copyprotected floppy disks. Prior to CAPS, you could either archive a *cracked* version of an original game or use whdload to install it to hd (and backup the hd contents).  CAPS provides tools that let you create images of copyprotected disks. The image format is "ipf".

The user library is a plugin that can be used by software developers to make their software support ipf images. WinUAE already supports ipf images, now that the library is available for Linux, LinuxUAE can be updated to include support for those images too.

You're playing the *original* game, not a crack - i.e. no crack intro, no bugs or incompatabilities added by the crackers, you can relive the great tradition of taking a break at regular intervalls to search for certain words in the manual (manual copy protection) etc.

Using ipf images with UAE is just an added benefit imho - CAPS' main goal was to create a way to backup (and, more importantly, *restore*)  original disks.

so how do you go about downloading the images?? I looked at the game database site and couldnt figure it out. Its annoying getting games from back2theroots that are cracked and wont work with whdload! It would be great to be able to get the originals...

So what the hell is the point of this project if nobody can get hold of the image's legally?? It seems pretty stupid to me....

Pardon?

Please answer my question - what benefits are there over disk images (ADF)?

It seems to me you are assuming that all disk image files are cracks, which is a plain bogus assumption.

Please point out exactly which cracked games you have downloaded from back2roots.

IPF files are disk images. But unlike ADF, IPF files are made to be able to handle various copy protections (non-standard tracks and such) which ADF can not handle. Thus many games which can be backed up in original form using IPF files need to have their copy protection removed (i.e. be cracked) to work as ADF files.

Air Bucks ECS
Impressions 1992
Strategy / Crack / ADF, Commercial

notice where is says crack! :) Id just like to be able to legally get original game disks to use the whdload, and not have them not work because they are cracked games.
