Whoever did the leaking is in deep sh!t for sure. Microsoft will be massively damaged. Mass unemployment is looming in the IT sector. Microsoft, the US Exchequer, and thousands of businesses are set to lose billions. And let's face it: the authorities treat the loss of such money as greater than the loss of hundreds of lives. Microsoft have friends in the US government, and you can be sure they'll use everything they have to track down the source of the leak and any of the primary download sources around him/her.

This isn't like pirating mp3 or even Half Life 2 source: don't get it wrong, the authorities will take this very, very seriously if it's true (and it seems to be). I bet more than one person got their door kicked down by a SWAT team yesterday. ;)

Thought this was funny, found it on the BBC News Website:

for Microsoft to have this code paraded in public is hugely embarrassing. Not least because the code is littered with profanity and might show that many Microsoft programmers do not do a very good job.

Littered with profanity?!!!!  :-o

You should see the sources to my employers fruit machines ;-) Generally, the more the projects go on, the more the programmers hate the machine, and the more profanity appears in the sources :-D

In fact, a quick grep for the F word in my current project pulls up 19 results ;-)

It is possible that MS dont see this as a totally bad thing. They have been struggling for some time with a lot of people/businesses that dont want to upgrade and this could perhaps be a solution when they finally get Longhorn out.

@KennyR

According to this story, it looks as though someone 'walked' straight into their FTP server and helped themselves.

The stories vary how much was actually downloaded though. This file is reported to be just over 600MB uncompressed. The whole source is reported to be in excess of 20GB, so this would appear to be a very small part. Mind you, time will tell if there is any more code available.

That's really cynical. It was my first thought too.

From the BBC report again, explaining the meaning of source code

Quote

When a program is compiled to become a working program this code is scrambled and becomes unreadable.

Has anybody  ever seen the RIFF WAVE loading code from older windows NDKs?

It's bloody scrambled and unreadable already! I dread to think what more important, private code may look like!

I guess they were using Windows 2000 to run their FTP server :-)

Geez, MyDoom, more security holes, a major source code leak, this has been a bad week for the Redmond Beast. :-D

suckers - Ooop! Did I say that out loud? ;-)

Hopefully this will encourage people to find other solutions to their computing needs.

And you can bet there'll be no weekend for Microsoft employees this week - I do have sympathy for them there. :-(

Uh, spooky #### goin on at that Neowin site. Those tooltip links. Internet... source code.. e.tc. does not appear as links in the source of the page. Wonder how that works.
Seems to have something  to do with this however.

Ya know hackers/crackers would get their hands on and then release their own updates which happen to be trojans...

OOPS!  Did I say that out loud?   :-D
