Yeah, it gets better and better.
I'd like to see some serious speed improvements for the custom-chip emulation, though.

Well, when I went to look, there was a big warning about it being a "EXPERIMENTAL A500 VERSION" so if your not using it just for games....

That's a separate A500 version that was introduced somewhere around 0.8.22, in addition to the main program. Never tried it.

The main WinUAE 0.8.24 program is now extremely fast and stable (has been for a while, but particularly since 0.8.23), and can emulate an A1200 or A4000 to near-perfection.

In fact, it's getting to the point where WinUAE is so good that I'm beginning to be unable to justify having lots of money tied up in Amiga hardware!  :-(  :-)

Hmmm.... I dunno.

My work PC (admittedly not cutting edge): AMD Duron 1.2Ghz, 384Mb RAM, Windows 2000, Kyro II graphics card.

My best classic: A4000, Mediator 4000, Voodoo 3 3000, Cyberstorm MkIII and a bunch of PCI/Zorro cards.

In terms of raw cpu power (handling big archives), WinUAE does have a slight edge, but a lot of things aren't as good.

The P96 UAEGfx driver is sluggish compared to the P96 Voodoo 3 drivers on the 4000. Window refresh, scrolling in IBrowse, everything is more responsive on the A4000/Voodoo, and noticeably so.

A lot of games work under WinUAE, but it just doesn't seem as smooth as playing them on a proper 15Khz synced PAL display from the 4000 (or my 1200).

Also, it does seem to have a slight latency (not slowness, just latency) that isn't present on my real Amigas, my AmigaONE with OS4, or even my friends Amithlon box.

Don't get me wrong, I think UAE and WinUAE are really nice programs, and have done a lot of good for the Amiga, I just still prefer the real thing.

Agreed. Emulation will always lack something tangible.

I would have agreed with you right up until I ran winuae 0.8.23 on my 3Ghz Laptop... Up untill that point the Audio was always not quite right.

Now the Emualton is vastly superior to the real thing, from a user point of view... from a geek point of view... You aren't getting your hands on my Classic Amiga's unless it's over my cold, slightly stinky, dead body

The real things I only power up satify any retro urges I have, I try to run them as little as posible since they only have a finite life span.

@xeron
To run the emulation effectively, one may have use a processor’s with larger L2 cache. Throwing plenty of Mhz at the emulator wouldn’t hurt that particular case.

The best feature is the Floppy drive sound emulation.  Its way to cool.
One of the two Waynes who ran Amiga.org for so many years, so many painful years.  Oh when will the nightmares stop!

It is good, but unfortunately not quite as realistic as the floppy sound in the "SainT" atari ST emulator. Sure the motor, and the "clicks" sound good, but the grind when the head moves just doesn't sound like a floppy disk. SainT really has it spot on.
