Well, apart from the coders being hardcore MOS fans , it does eat serious CPU sometimes - up to 60% on a 600MHz G3. I'm not sure a real 68k CPU could run it. Maybe even an emulated one couldn't.
Dont get me wrong, i'm impressed with MLdonkey. That is just what I have been waiting for acctually!!! But 60% CPU time?? How is that possible?

Only Linux makes it possible.

And I should mention that 60% CPU is more than mplayer uses when playing a DVD-sized DivX.

Remember AxE that like a gun, it isn't the istrument/app itself that it is illegal or that kills people  but the use that you do with it.

Cheers

mldonkey can be set to connect to the same servers as AmiGift. And bittorrent. And directconnect. And soulseek. And dozens of others.

You know that bit of reasoning would be even better, if you replaced 'gun' with 'machine gun' or maybe 'nuclear bomb'

Oh but wait-a-minute, those are illegal...

laws are different all over the world, but there is a quick and easy test...a butter knife is not illegal, because most people use a butter knife to spread butter (and before you troll me, AND OR peanut butter, and in some countries JAM and even a marshmellow type spread on holidays)...and it doesn't make the butter knife illegal simply because one wack job used a butter knife to commit a crime.

By the same token, machine guns in most all countries are almost always illegal because they are only used to kill people....oh  sure, maybe 1% of the time, the use was simply historical display...aka like in a museum, or maybe just to teach gun design to an aspiring student...but it fails the test, of how its 'typically' used.

So take something like a hunting rifle, where I live, those are also legal...legal because 99% of people with a hunting rifle, use it to hunt, not to kill people.

Does MLDonkey fit the 'typical' use test.

You decide.  BUT GET REAL.

Everyone knows p2p is used for downloading pirated mp3 and movies, warez and porn. It has no legitimate use that http and ftp can't do a hell of a lot better. Can we move on and not try to salve our consciences?

Mostly because the UK is still stuck in the stone age and people generally have 56k modems.

mp3 is the most popular use of p2p these days, but DivX is catching up fast, and if a new PC game iso(s) isn't on the servers then its not worth playing.
