What defines a modern OS today is its support for Unicode, FreeType and font antialiasing. Glad to see AOS4 following the path of MorphOS in those domains.

Not that your comment is worth answering, but lets just remember that MorphOS is a clone of AmigaOS, not the other way around.

AmigaOS is not following MorphOS anymore than it is following WindowsXP.

This thread is about AmigaOS, not MorphOS, leave comments like this at the door.

Nice screenshot, especially the IRC channel in the front window ;-)
They say that if you play a Microsoft CD backwards it has satanic messages on it... heck.. that\\\'s nothing.. if you play it fowards it will install Windows.

@kidice

regarding the drawer icons....sorry I didn't explain myself properly....I'll do another try:

I think that the icons themselves looks confusing, and I honestly don't care if the "prefs" drawer is a "drawer".....it should rather use an prefslike symbol instead of a drawer symbol to reflect the stuff inside.

As it looks now, we have a lot of ugly looking purple/blueish drawers taking all the attention, and that's not very intuitive for the unexperienced user. The only thing telling what's inside is a small symbol put on each drawer.......it should be the other way round......a small drawer with a big symbol integrated.

As it looks right now I just see a lot of drawers.....not very pretty ones! - I would love to see the system icons being a reflection of the very practical and speedy  OS AmigaOS is. I just don't think these icons give me that impression!

Or is this running on a cyberstorm, and the Mouse Pointer an Amiga Sprite so not part of the screen image?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A CyberStorm with a 750FX

No, it's a Voodoo screen, with a hardware cursor, hence you don't see it on the shot.

Does that mean it's a nasty two colour, gem clone mouse pointer?

I hope you allow the use of the good old AmigaOS 2.0 mouse pointer, all my boxes use that pointer, except my Linux box, because I can't figure out how to change the mouse pointer in that...

Sorry, my mistake - I'm used to seeing the OS pretty much in it's own partition.

Heh. I just took your avatar for my X pointer in Linux :-)

jpegtopnm 795.jpg | ppmtopgm | pgmtopbm | pbmtoxbm >matt.pointer
cp matt.pointer matt.mask
bitmap matt.mask (hit "set" and "file->save", "file->quit")
xsetroot -cursor matt.pointer matt.mask

voila.
Too bad applications and window managers override it, so it's only when the pointer is on the background :-)

But she's still a gorgeous babe even in black/white..

Of course, and it glows in the dark! Especially when Orcs are near ;-)

The default is still the OS 3.x pointer, but I think we'll include a set of new pointers at well. I personally use the BeOS hand pointer, but I guess tastes are different (speaking of which, I think that a Retro-OS 1.2 theme for OS 4 would be killer ;-) )

You actually *can* change the pointer under X with XF86 4.3 (guess what I am using the BeOS hand pointer there, too ;-))
Look out, I\'ve got a gun

:-D Have you been reading the #AROS irc logs?

Note: To those who don't know, I want an AOS1.3 theme for AROS :-)

Really? Hmmm, maybe I should read the Fcuking manual... Will KDE over ride my pointer? Actually, I might have to update my X... mine is several months old...

That would be so cool - an operating system that notifies you by changing the pointer colour that your boss is near :-)

Oh dear.....I forgot myself and tried clicking on the screenshot!  :-D

NIce work to all involved.
A1-XE - G4 800MHz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, Radeon 9250, OS 4.1
A1200T - PPC603 240MHz / 68040 50MHz, 128MB RAM, Mediator, OS 3.9 / 4.1
A1200 (No. 2) - M-TEC 68030 50MHz, 4GB CF, KS 3.0, OS 3.0
A500 - ACA500 with ACA1232.
CDTV - in Progress: SCSI, 9 pin joy/mouse connectors, KS switcher.

Non-CBM - Atari STe, Atari Falcon, Apple ][e, ZX Spectrum, CPC6128.
Gone but not forgotten (and slowly getting them back): CPC464, C64, Vic-20.

I may have a problem

A piece of advice, don't make a screenshot into wallpaper.

I managed to fit a more or less usable system onto an 8 meg ramdisk. That included the complete workbench setup plus prefs editors, a backdrop picture, Tools and Utilities drawers, a set of Truetype fonts, but no "real" app.

A typical installation with all the stuff on it should be about 15 megabytes. That would include everything from a standard OS 4 workbench but still no apps.

Things like the memory display should be updated for the final OS 4.0 release, this should also include bugfixes and the like. We've scheduled a complete rewrite of Workbench for 4.1.

Did it sound like one ? I don't think it does :-) It's just a promise to for the best effort - there's too much that is out of my reach...
