Wanted: Developers to port ArtEffect and StormC to AmigaOS4
« on: August 22, 2003, 12:51:53 PM »
Taken from the AmigaOS4 mailing list:

"German Amiga portal Amiga-news.de reports: on an email sent by Jürgen Haage in which he seeks developers to port ArtEffect and StormC to AmigaOS4. Furthermore H&P will stop the sale of some of H&P's Amiga products. H&P's best sellers PageStream, StormC, ArtEffect and AmigaWriter will not be effected."

Hmm. Pagestream is H&Ps bestseller? But they don't make Pagestream :-)

Anyway, controversy around H&P aside, I'm glad to see packages such as StormC, ArtEffect and AmigaWriter will continue to be developed, as this can only be a positive thing for the Amiga community.

Uhm, is there some rule that your own products have to be the best selling ones?

No, but in this context, they were talking about the discontinuation of H&P products. Pagestream isn't made, or exclusively sold, by H&P, therefore how could H&P discontinue it even if they wanted to?

Porting StormC to OS4 is very welcome. Hopefully someone picks the joboffer.

Hmmmm .....
doesn't H&P have 1 or 2 paid developers with Amiga-experience ?

Why are they seeking external help ?

Somehow I fear they are hoping for someone to give them a free ride
(wouldn't be a premiere).
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

It's probably not a job offer in the strict sense, they are looking for a freelance programmer. I guess it means that this port is to be done at home and payment will come in form of royalties.  Anyway, I hope that it gets ported to MorphOS as well, a source level debugger for gcc would be very welcome.

Various posts on various mailing lists over the past two years or so would indicate that the enswer to that question is "no".  I don't think they've had any in-house developers since the guy who ported UAE to QNX to get AmigaXL left them.

Mind you, if I was thinking of developing anything for AmigaOS4, I'd think long and hard before dealing with H&P on that basis.

Could it be that AmigaXL / Amithlon are the "H&P" products that  will cease? This could lead the way for Bernithlon to see the light of day

 :-D

and then I woke up  :-(

Shouldn't be too difficult. We've already done the compiler toolchain that could be used, and with GDB we also have a source code level debugger. A nice GUI frontend for gdb would be very welcome indeed.

And double-clicking on an error message is definitely more comfortable than anything else :-)
Look out, I\'ve got a gun

What I want to know is...

... how much will they pay me to do it?

All well and good doing it for the Good of the Community, but a kitty's got to eat.

@Neko

Shouldn't you e-mail H&P this question? How should we know the answer ...?
.

well it makes sense they would stop the sale of some products.

For example, OS 3.9 won't be a big seller much longer...sure its still the last release for classic hardware (maybe unless they do OS 4.0 modules or 68k, as some suggested).

So...it seems H&P is still around as a software vendor....thats cool...and os 4 only?  No morphos native ports?

surprised they are amiga loyalists.....but still its good they will offer some much needed software.
