Ok, so this isn't exactly Amiga related  but it is about the G5 ... so apols in advance.

"Mac fans are rushing to get their hands on what Apple calls the fastest personal computer in the world. "

Check it out at BBC Online ...

@mike

The reason I submitted it is not because of the G5 being out but because of apples claims.

Hello
Apple claimed that 100 thousand customers bought
the new G5 machine (see news.google.com)
At US$ 3000 (average price), and 10% net profit,
they will get at least US$ 30 M profit.
However this year 160 millions PC will be sold
worldwide. Imagine the profit of Intel, MS, PC
and motherboard makers.
IIRC the sales number of AmigaOne is approx
1300 units. Why nobody buy more AmigaOne or
Pegasos boards? Lack of promotion or applications?

The G5 is not the fastest desktop currently available. Case closed.

Xeons and Opterons are for the server marked.

So the G5 could be the fastest desktop.

The New Apple G5 is sweet but not the fastest machine in the world. Thats a misleading statement. It is also false that there have been 1300 Amiga One units.. not even close. I'd say under 500...

So the G5 could be the fastest desktop.

have a look at spec.org. here you can see, that apples g5 is NOT the fastest desktop system. for example the sun blade 2000, the blade 1000 are faster (and designed to be desktop systems, even if the name doesn´t show)
let´s say : apples g5 is a very fast desktop system for a payable price. :-D

You guys seem to be getting confused with some of the terminology here.

I think that by 'Desktop' they mean not 'Workstation'

In other words, It's not a specialised high performance computer for certain industries - It's a home computer.

It probably IS the fastest home and office computer

Nothing boosts publicity like a little controversy!   :-D

Anyway, there's really no difference between a desktop and workstation, these days.  Even desktop computers are getting built-in RAID, and some come with registered memory.  The only thing that really seperates a server from a desktop is redundancy, like redundant power and storage.  There's plenty of dual-processor hardware out there that's used for workstation work, and there's no reason it can't be used as a desktop.

Besides, for $3000 (without monitor, or anything else, for that matter), it sure does place in the workstation category.   ;-)

Exactly what part of it makes you want to puke?  Maybe it's the thousands of applications available for it?  Or how about the fact that it's Unix-based, up-to-date and modern?  Or wait, maybe it's all those nifty, currently available machines that it runs on?  Or even maybe it's all those millions of people that use it?  Or most of all, maybe it's because it exists (ie. not vaporware) and you can go out and buy it today?

Please be more specific.  Generalities like "I just don't like it" are hardly worth debating. :-P

Xeons and Opterons are for the server marked.

Note that; Athlon 64 (socket 940/dual channel/128bit edition) is identical to Opteron 1xx except for the name/label/string id/QA. Athlon 64-940 can run on  Opteron 1xx nForce III motherboard (socket 940).

Nvidia’s nForce III(Socket 940, dual channel solution) supersedes nForce II 400 Ultra (Socket A, dual channel solution). K8 (i.e. Athlon 64 754) single channel solution replaces nForce II 400(non-ultra) targeted market.

I don’t recall nForceIII is targeted for the server market (i.e. includes a 8X AGP Pro slot).
Amiga 1200 PiStorm32-Emu68-RPI 4B 4GB.
Ryzen 9 7900X, DDR5-6000 64 GB, RTX 4080 16 GB PC.
