"Mac OS X 10.3, aka Panther, will not be a 64-bit operating system, despite running on a 64-bit processor, the PowerPC 970 aka the G5."

How bad is it when an amiga site not only posts rumors, but non-amiga rumors no less.

Falling behind?  How many other operating systems out there take advantage of 64-bit CPUs?

And what's the commonality between all these OS's?  They are primarily used in servers, where 64 bit computing makes a bigger difference.  Aside from Linux which has a small desktop following and a smattering of BSD (on which MAC OS X is based), none of these OS's really serve the desktop.  In that regard, it looks as though Apple is ahead and not behind.  Until 64-bit desktop software arrives (or is deemed necessary), you're unlikely to see much progression.  I doubt that Apple sees the immediate need to make Panter fully 64-bit when there are so few 64-bit applications thus far.  Seeing as Apple is routinely releasing a major version of OS X roughlly every year, I'll be surprised if Panther's successor isn't "more" 64-bit, when some time will have passed and there will be more to talk about.

Soooooo...  maybe someone would like to explain the exact significance of 64-bit code?  I thought it just meant a program could access obscene amounts of system memory and load more instructions/data simultaneously.  Is 64-bit really more powerful than 32-bit, or is it just a performance thing?

Yeah, I AM stupid.  :-?

No, you're not stupid.

Basicly yes, 64bit allows larger adress spaces and thus more ram... but also 64 bit integer calculations are speeded up and many Databases, scientific and some games will benefit from that.

For the Athlon the advantages is that it will feature a revised and improved CPU architecture... getting rid of the old bad bit s of x86 and replacing them with modern designs... thus a faster CPU will result.

Think 8bit to 16 bit, and then 16 to 32 bit transitions...

its a well known fact that apple are not making MacOSX 64bit untill people have the hardware. Its been reported around various places and i'd bet Apple themselfs has said this themselfs.

They're not releasing a 64bit OS untill everyone has hardware.

Wonder if this has anything to do with, selling them the new Panther and then charging customers extra for the 64bit version!!!!

I'd think Apple would update certain areas for 64bit.  Such as math libraries, graphic libraries,  amoung others.   A slow migration to 64bit is a good thing.

How many OS X owners out there will jump into a G5 boxen soon after the release?  Developers need time to take advantage of the G5 and such.

I want a G5 PowerMac.  Oh yeah!
