AmigaOne XE shipping
« on: April 18, 2003, 09:08:04 PM »
Over on the AmigaOne mailing list comes news that the XE models are now shipping:
...we are currently (from Wednesday last) shipping the A1-XE in volume, first to the dealers, then to the developers who ordered the SE way back but decided to change to the XE ... We expect to get the backlog cleared by the end of the month...
See  Yahoo list

Alen also makes a good argument about using AmigaOnes in place of Intel/AMD-based servers.

the power argument is meaningless... 1 P4 at 3ghz can do the work of at least 4 G3's@600mhz... so one P4 would be more economical... and also cheaper by far...

"what else do you think I'm doing in the office this sunny bank holiday Friday!"

Acting professional and updating your website to let potential customers know what is going on? yeah sure if that is going to happen anytime soon.

ROTFL. The guy that's missed the point by several parsecs!

Firstly, the A1 is not being shipped with G3@600, but g3@800 and g4@800.

It is not true that 1*P4@3G = 4*G3@600. If your sole benchmark is MHz, then you know nothing about computers. This argument has been shot down so often here and elsewhere I'm not going to bother expanding.

It is rare that a server requires raw processing power. It is not used for the same things as a desktop computer, and certainly doesn't have the same number of concurrent users.  2 G3@600 are better than 1 P4@3000 when talking about servers: you're spreading the load. Of course, that's assuming you can get a P4 + cooling system into a 1U case.

A server farm (a small one would have "only" 600 mobos in racks) does not just require electricity to function, it also requires electricity for air-conditioning: you can cook an egg on a P4, whereas the G3/G4 runs much, much cooler.
Air conditioning eats up power (and the hotter the air, the more power required). It also circulates dust - which a Pentium, requiring more ventilation, also stirs up much more of - and this is not good for the humans (remember them?) who actually operate and maintain the servers.

Interestingly, on French radio this morning there was a discussion of how using more efficient electric appliances (they mentioned TVs and dishwashers) could save up to 30% of electricity consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emission by an impressive amount.

Lastly, the price difference between a x86 mobo and the XE would be recouped in direct electricity savings (the board alone) in about a year, if Alan's calculations are correct.

Acting Professional & looking Professional are too different things.

And having done business with eyetech in the past i say thay are Professional enough.

I think MicroSofts web site looks like a joke with its FisherPrice look. But you dont see me going on & on about it.

I see many amateur web sites that look much more Professional than alot of big corporate websites.
There are some very Professional small businesses that dont have a web site at all cos they dont feel the need for one.

I think most ppl would like to get thier hands on the hardware that they had ordered first & eyetech have enough on thier hands trying to for fill the back log than to worry about a web site.

So we have all the boards here but we are spending time to work on our web site so delivery will be delayed.

If they dont have time then they dont have time.

When some one comes up with a way to make time im sure the world will know about.

AOS4 will come on A1 as soon as it is considered to be
working flawlessly and probably not a moment sooner. The friedens
are perfectionists.
Hate figure.

@Alkemyst

This might be a first  :-)  but i agree with what your saying about websites but i still believe they should (aswell as other Amiga sites) update their websites.

Why? to let people who are coming back to the Amiga or new users know what is going on, they could even just post a url to the A1 mailing list or something.

Imagine if you knew nothing about the Amiga but you wanted a new Amiga you have heard of so you decide to browse the companies websites but the sites was badly out of date, would you think "I must read web forums and mailing lists"? nope.
