strategy games on amiga
« on: October 03, 2003, 08:12:37 AM »
Hi all,
Just wondering which one is the best or the most fun, easy to jump in, multiplayer  etc between freeciv, civilization (AGA), colonization and may be a few others I can not remember ?

Personally, I prefer Civ over Colonization. However, CivAGA is badly programmed and not very system friendly at all. FreeCiv uses MUI and is very compatible, but it can be difficult to get up and running. I'm not sure if there's support for computer players (If there is, I haven't figured out to implement it yet; maybe I should read the manual).

I've not played Tales of Tamar, so I can't speak for that.

Depending on your definition of strategy, you might also consider the Bullfrog games: Populous, Populous 2, Theme Park, Syndicate. Worms was initially considered a strategy game upon release...

Are bullfrog games multiplayer ones ? AFAIR them park was badly coded as well with ramdom crash. I liked to play with syndicate and powermonger.
To be honest I am looking for a game that I could play with my girlfriend, non violent. Like most girl, she does not like killing and racing so no 1PS, sports and wargame.
So far we are happy with pinball illusions, dynablaster (with some other players), marbles, rodland and super methane bros. But I am sure there are more and more fun (Them park would definitely be one).

@lionstorm:

My girlfriend and I spend ridiculous quantities of time playing Pang.  Non-violent, co-operative 2-player game.  Sounds like what you're after.

We also play WormsDC in team mode.  Definately violent but the cuteness/humour factor certainly makes up for that.

As for strategy games if you have two mice you can play Settlers and team up on the computer players.

And you could get a Atari 8bit or C64 emulator so you could play one of the best games of all time -M.U.L.E.

My girlfriend is an economist and she is understandably addicted to that game.  Personally I like hunting down that elusive Mountain Wampas...

@Matt_H:

To get AI player in Freeciv enter the following into the server before starting a game:

set aifill x

where 'x' is a number up to 30.

IMO Freeciv blows Civ and CivAGA out of the water, even without all features yet implemented.

It does take a bit of effort to get it set up, but if anyone needs help just ask me.

I spend way to much of my time playing/modding that game.

It is multiplayer but you need two computers and some sort of network or link.  Or you can play on-line over the pubserver.

I would definitely say Settlers. My sister and I have fought neverending battles in that great game... and still do when we're both home for visits :)

Of course there's always the dispute over who gets the best mouse, but that can be taken care of with some nifty PS/2 mouse adaptor (have two of them)

These games we played  alot through the times in co-up / vs;

Ports of Call
Tanx
Dynablaster
Pang
Brides of Dracula
Parasol Stars
Future Basketball

Cheers,

Tritus (on Aminet) is very funny!
I can also recommend Lemmings.

Settlers might be allright but not easy to jump in, lots of things to understand...
Tried Lemmings but she did not like it but found marbles not so bad.

For Strat games I recommend Battle Isle and History Line 1914-1918. I remember many fun gaming sessions with both. Great 2 player game.

For a "girl game" I whole heartedly recomment either Rainbow Islands or Rodland. My wife loves both of those. Of course she also loves Power Monger and Pirate's so go figure *shrug*

Also Knights - similar to Battle Island but plays in the time when Robin Hood was alive.

Observing girls I know playing games, I must agree with Worms DC. Definitely it's violent, but in the cute way, also humorous.
The other game I found is Heroes of Might and Magic, but as it has to be Amiga game, then the closest IMO will be Settlers.
I also found some loving to play Unreal or Counter Strike time to time, therefore it is possible to try Quake or Duke Nukem.
From other titles I would propose Jet Strike (Especially AGA version) with it's aerolympics).
Maybe also Wasted Dreams? Dynablaster (and other clones) for sure.
