FreeCD "Elite Experience" not available at the moment
« on: February 18, 2003, 09:59:23 AM »
Because of unsure copyright-questions regarding Elite (and also between the author Ian Bell and co-author David Braban) the freeCD "The Elite Experience" is not available at the moment and please do not copy this cd-rom yourself.

There is the hope that the problems can be solved, so that there will be then a new version of the freeCD again available.

Here a post from David Braban:

All,

As many here know already, I've asked for versions of leaked Elite sources, and versions of the game itself to be removed from various web sites.

Whether you think it right or wrong, I am attempting to protect the copyright status of the game.

Elite is not in the public domain, nor is it freeware or shareware. I would like to make it shareware (this preserves the copyright status), as with Frontier and First Encounters but it is not yet.

I have been turning a blind eye to the various tribute versions (and I do appreciate that these versions have been lovingly crafted in most cases), but the recent appearance of Elite for Pocket PC, advertised as 'Freeware' through commercial distribution was the last straw.

For those conspiracy theorists here, this has nothing to do with Elite 4 - that is sadly still a way off. It came to our attention as a result of looking to see people's response to our recently released "Darxide EMP".

I expect Elite versions can be restored shortly, probably as shareware, if all parties agree.

frontier II -elite IiI (final encounters) is a game i miss on amiga, a source code for this would have been nice, why not try and get him to release it for us? ...or get someone on amiga to port it for him, wont make much money compared to elite II though....
Whats up with all the hate!

For this question you better contact directly Frontier Development (David Braban). Maybe you are lucky. :)

One thing about Frontier which i`ve never been able to comprehend is how a 640k file seems to be
able to hold 1,000,000,000 systems and a stupid amount of planets. How can it store all that info?
The PC version I think is about 150k smaller, but thats because it has almost no sound (I`m
guessing). HOW!?
