JPEG backdrops on wb3.0
« on: October 02, 2003, 12:18:47 PM »
Having followed previous advice i downloaded and installed the JPEG-DT file from aminet to allow me to use JPEGs in WB3.0. However it still dont work, i can now select the files in the WBBACKGROUND prefs tool, but when i go to save or use the settings it comes up with an error "can't open xxx.jpg"

I think datatype background support was introduced in OS3.5.

In the past I used jpg backdrops without problems on my a1200 with wb 3.0. If it says that it couldn't open the file, maybe it's in a jpeg format (progressive?) that the datatype doesn't recognise. I would suggest to try with other jpgs, or some other jpg datatype.

Yeh I used jpeg backdrops with 3.0 before too.  Check that the installer is putting the datatytpe files in the right places.

I used jpg backgrounds with wb 3.1.  I do remember the datatype that I had wouldn't load a certain flavor of jpeg.  I thought I saw somewhere they were called photoshop jpegs.  Not sure though it's been a while since I used my 1200 for the internet...

Me too. But JPEG decoding and colour reduction took so long on each boot that in the end I converted the backdrop to ILBM so I'd have the backdrop straight away.

Do it on the Amiga. There are lots of tools for reading JPEGs and saving IFFs. E.g. PPaint or GfxCon. Search Aminet.

I would guess it's in one of the later additions to the jpeg standard which your datatype doesn't support. Load it in gimp and save it back without any fancy settings enabled :-)

not true.
go to http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=914 and download "gimp-ilbm-0.9.4-1.i386.rpm".

I did for my red hat system. it's an IFF loader/saver and i've loaded iff's with no problem. just tried it today to  make sure.

Try loading it with Multiview, then you will see if your jpeg datatype can handle it.

Sometimes JFIF's are named JPG and some
datatypes don't load JFIF. Save them out
again or try different datatype, test with
multiview as suggested.
