Pegasos? Genesi? Does anyone use these things?
« on: September 30, 2003, 02:44:22 PM »
Hi!
Just checked out the Pegasos website again looking for a glimmer of hope in the computing world- do we have any users of this OS about who can give me an update? I still don't know what a Genesi is... (Sega Genesis?)

Is the Pegasos built on custom hardware? is it hardware dependent? can it do seamless animation like my Amiga500? Is there a software base? Does it have a future? Is there a god?

Any answers much appreciated.

Cheers,
RedWarrior

This is where a part of the userbase hang out apart from when here @ amiga.org

If your question wasn't a joke, i can tell you the pegasos2 is arriving pretty soon. So the pegasos concept is alive and kicking.

No it wasn't a joke... I'm seriously looking to recapture the fun in computing I had back in the early Amiga days... and the Amiga One with it's specs, pricetag and vapourware OS probably won't fit the bill.

The new mac is looking tempting, though by the time I save enough to afford one, it will be obsolete.

...also why is my signature all screwed up with visible html tags? (I even disabled it for this post!)

@RedWarrior

First, let's clear up a misperception you have:

The Pegasos is *not* an OS.  The OS is MorphOS.  The Pegasos is a motherboard that runs MorphOS.

Genesi is the company which produces both the Pegasos and MorphOS.

The Pegasos uses commodity hardware, such as off-the-shelf ATI Radeon video cards.  Animation runs fine for me, including compressed video which your A500 could not handle.  The Software base for MorphOS is pretty decent, being able to run your old Amiga software as well as a growing list of new applications.  In fact, the Pegasos has a bundle of software called the SuperBundle.

I see a bright future for the Pegasos.  So much so, that I signed on to work for Genesi at the end of last year, and have not regretted it since.  There is a real product here that does pretty much everything I need.  I can't wait for the second generation Pegasos motherboards to arrive shortly.
Try blazedmongers new Free Universal Computer kit, available with the GUI toolkit Your Own Universe, the popular IT edition, Extremely Reliable System for embedded work, Enhanced Database development and Wide Area Development system for telecommuting.

I still don't know what a Genesi is... (Sega Genesis?)

The Pegasos is a PPC motherboard that was designed by bPlan.  MorphOS is an PPC-based OS with built-in Amiga compatibility.  It will run a large chunk of Amiga software that does not bang the hardware.

Genesi is a company started up by Bill Buck asnd Raquel Valesco (hopefully spelled that correctly) that is currently producing the Pegasos and MorphOS.

Is the Pegasos built on custom hardware?

Not in the same ways as our Classic Amigas.  You'll find it very difficult to find (outside of the Console and embedded market) custom hardware.

The Pegasos is its own design, but built with off-the-shelf parts.  It's a MicroATX motherboard.  (The AmigaOne is as well built using off-the-shelf parts. )

is it hardware dependent?

Not sure exactly what your question is, but in short, it can fit AGP, PCI cards.  It has USB, Firewire, built-in-audio, ethernet, and IDE.      Linux will have more drivers to run more cards, but MorphOS does support Voodoo's and Radeon graphics cards.

can it do seamless animation like my Amiga500?

Not exactly sure what you mean here.  It all depends on software.  I can't say I've tried to play Anim files, but VCD's, DVD's and DivX's movies play very well with MPlayer and Frogger.  MAME works great and plays games rather smoothly (so I can keep my JAMMA boards in storage.)

Is there a software base?

It can run Amiga 68K and PPC software (as long as it doesn't try and bang the hardware.)  There is also a growing amount of developers that are recompiling their works for it to be MOS native and some open source software that made it's way.

Off the top of my head:

Commercial/Shareware:
-Hollywood 1.5 (Presentation/Multimedia/Programming)
-FroggerNG (plays lots of different video formats)
-Pro Station Audio
-Digibooster Pro (coming soon)
-PageStream (coming soon)
-FxPaint
-FxScan
-VHI Studio
-Feeble Files
-Software Tycoon
- ... and more. :P

Open Source:
-Mplayer (can play DVDs!)
-MAME
-UAE (in case you need to run some software that bangs the hardware)
-Quake
-Bochs (PC Emulator)
-Yam
-... and more... :P

Amiga 68K/PPC software that works in MOS:
-ImageFX
-Descent: FreeSpace
-IBrowse 2.3
-ArtEffect
-Cinema 4D
- ... and more ... ;)

Mind you, this only applies to MorphOS.  Genesi are trying to get everyone to port their OS to the Pegasos as well. ;)

Does it have a future?

Well... Genesi have done a lot of work in enticing developers to port their products.  Nothing can be certain, but it seems like they have done a lot of work to make sure that they have a future.  And there is already more to come: Pegasos 2, and umm... a few "annoncements" are supposed to be forthcoming in mid-October to coincide with it's release.

So, wait-n-see will probably be the best thing to say.

Being cautious: yes, I have a Pegasos with MorphOS, and use it to my greatest satisfaction.

Riiight... I guess I need a die-hard Amiga fan to verify the quality of animation... I've had this rant countless times before.  Compressed video might be very nice, but when the computer is smoother than broadcast with rock solid stability it's way more fun... I feel like I'm actually in control.

Thanks for the company break-down though.

What exactly do you want to know reallly...  Would you like to know how sprites are animated in games?  Would you like to know how well it plays Anim files?

What is the primary test you would like done?
