Why do you still use your old Amiga?
« on: September 30, 2003, 12:22:00 PM »
Firstly, I'm not putting anyone down for using old Amigas, nor am I anti-Amiga. However, I was talking to my friend regarding the amiga community, and he was curious to know exactly why people still use their amiga over more modern (sometimes even cheaper) solutions/systems.

So, what are your reasons?

I don't, there is no reason for me to do that anymore. It's in my closet.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

Because the system is very responsive and is fun to use everytime I put it on after I shutdown my 3GHZ Pentium system.

Thats a great question! I have to say for me, its because my Amiga does what just about any thing that Windows can do, sure its not super fast. Things made for it though run great. I like the memories of better times. These were times when code was optimised to run on low spec systems, and it did awsome stuff. Its just plain fun too. It works, nevr crashes, and does everything I need it to do.

I also have a high spec PC to do all the oter (mind you a few) things I cant do well on the Amiga.

A very good question!

Because its different perhaps, because of nostalgia, and I'd hazard for many users the reason would also be that certain applications are not available on any other platform.

I must confess tho', when I look through what people are selling on ebay or through Computer Shopper etc, I am amazed at how cheap it is to build a PC.
As I pointed out the other day, someone paid 330 UKP/ 500 USD for a Cyberstorm PPC card - at these kinds of level of cost, it does make you wonder why they just don't buy a PC...
I like Amigas

What a pontless and stupid statement.

In what way is a modern, sub £1000,  3Ghz, Win2K/*nix PC "useless crap"?

In that it's not an amiga, no matter how much emulation you use - Lempkee's a demo coder after all, youv'e got to expect a degree of fanatacism :-)

Exactly! I'll tell you what:

I couldn't live (work) without my Windows PC machine!
I could live without my Pegasos, but I wouldn't *want to*!

Notice the difference? ;-)
(And the classic is in the closet, I'm keeping it only for nostalgic reasons now)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

Whenever I want to do some animation, or sequence some music, it's much easier to do these things with PPaint and OctaMED Soundstudio than anything on the PC (although for recording organic audio projects I use Cakewalk.) (Edit: or my trusty TEAC 4-track ;-))

But my main machine is an x86 box. As people have pointed out, they can't be beaten on price. For about £500 I got an Athlon system that runs apps nice and quick, (and in terms of 3D performance it pisses on the current video consoles from a great height.) And AROS just flies  :-D

I'm using my Amiga for almost everything...

The reason?
It's reliable!

I does what I'm telling it to do... Nothing else... Take the good old windows for an eksample... Why does it comunicate with the internet when you do nothing on it? -No explore is open, -nothing... Why?

These small things does that I'm staying with my miggy, I know and trust the Amiga Computer like no other platform...

Sure I certainly miss hitting the hardware of the Amiga Chipset (those were fun days), but The raw power avaiable to the coder now is fantastic. I can do things now that I could only dream of 10 years ago!!!

So, what are your reasons?

My Amigas are much more quick and responsive at the user interface level than Win-DOHS could ever hope to be.  Plus, my web site runs on my A4000T, which is turned on 24x7.
