Tivo could go the way of Amiga
« on: October 10, 2002, 12:49:50 AM »
This article talks about Tivo not doing so well, and compares it to the Amiga.  They also link to Amiga.org...  (apparently we're "nerd afficionados")

Well, ask Wayne the TiVo advocate, he knows all about it
If you go to the TiVo website there is a very interesting TiVo demo  :-D

I was gonna buy a Tivo but if this is true then........... :pissed:

Seems it would be good to integrate Amiga DE/anywhere into the Tivo.....

The Amiga flopped, and Commodore slowly lapsed into bankruptcy

Commodore didnt went bankrupt because the amiga flopped. As far as I know commodore went bankrupt because they made some pretty bad dispositions in the states. In Europe atleast the amiga never flopped. Actually commodore had quite a bite of the homecomputer marked.

While there were flopped amigas out there (a500+,a600,cdtv) PCs were the main reason for commodore and escom going down. And gateways troubles too.

This *ISN'T* true, it's one man's attempt to generate a self-fulfilling prophecy based on his opinion.

If you want it to become true, don't buy a Tivo (which is what it sounds like the author is hoping will happen).

Er... As usual, I'm confused.  Are they yalking about the Amiga, which was , especially in it's final A1200 days, a sales success--though not big enough to save Commodore from Medhi, or the set-top CDTV, which was a rather costly failure but not enough to drive commodore out of business?
Side discussion point-- Was Medhi Ali the first Arab terrorist in America?

:smack:
I'm not sure what the 'Slate' header means, but since I never heard of the author before and the story is on M$N, I tend to wonder if this 'feature column' is just bad old Redmond FUD.

For fairness sake, can someone post some info on the author?
Best,

Bob Kennedy

If i unnderstand this right, TIVO have only been going for 5 years or so. It is a young company that has been hit by the ".net" bubble and Sept-11. I think it is amazing that they are almost in the black so soon! When you consider many big companies are very much in the red with many more years behind them.

But then I could be talking out of my a*s!

@Marky_D_Sahd

The A1200 a success ?

It's anual sales were FAR lower than those of the A500, which sold
far less than the C=64 ....

Only a minority of A1200-buyers where 1st-time convicts, most just
switched fron an A500 (like me myself and I).

The A1200 was NOT superior to the PCs of the day (which the A500 was),
and the ~250k units sold under C= were far to few to get anywhere
near the SW-base (games) the A500 had.

If C= had concentrated on the Amiga in the late 80's, finishing AA
by 90 .... well that would have been a massive success, but AA in
late 92, with only very expensive small HDs (or none at all) was to
little to late.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

C= had income, they were just mismanaged. The A1200 may have sold less than the A500, but C= was still selling A500s AND they were still selling C=64s until almost the end. Heck they were even selling a few A600s, which must have cost nill in R&D. C= had a lot of models that WERE moving. Their stupid mistake was pouring so much money in their PC line that was failing miserably.
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!
