Sonnet Quaddoubler
« on: September 30, 2003, 02:07:19 AM »
If anyone is still reading this thread, I sent the inoperative quaddoubler back to sonnet.  I got it back last week, put it in, and lo and behold: 68040/55!  Quite fast. Very nice!

Wow! Nice  :-o

Check out the Sonnet Cresendo, which is a PPC on a PCI card. I'm under the impression that it and the SharkPPC might be the same thing!

i have no idea what you mean, but you forgot to include a title for thread.

there should be something in the software to prevent a thread being uploaded without a title.

you should get a message reminding the writer to put in the title, or something.

That's a common misconception of the Sonnet Cresendo.  The PCI label only means it works in the original PCI based Macs.  It uses the Processor slot, which is not PCI.  It's a dedicated slot similiar to the way that A3/4k's have processor slots.  But it is a nice card.  I've got the NewerTech G3 version in my Mac 8500.

Cool!  I've been contemplating one of these for a while.  Couple of questions for you.

Which model QuadDoubler did you get?
Which accellerator do you have it on?
How did you end up with 55MHz?
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

The Crescendo/7200 G3 plugs into a PCI slot.

Hello all.
I unsoldered the '040 on my BlizzardPPC, soldered in a socket, and put in a QuadDoubler. It's the 'B' version. According to Sysinfo, it's running at 57.10 MHZ.

Benchmarks -
Sysinfo:
    Dhrystones - 36154
    Mips              - 37.73
    MFlops          - 9.58

SysSpeed:
    Mips              - 36.15
    MFlops          - 13.72

It's about twice as fast as an '040 4000. Fusion 3.2 is almost usable with it.

Just for fun, here are the numbers from SysSpeed for my 240MHZ 603e:
    Mips -     295.14
    MFlops - 182.77
SunBlade 1000 2x1200mhz UltraSparc III+, 8GB RAM, XVR1000, 73GB and 300GB FC drives, DVD, SunPCi IIIpro - 1GB RAM (yes it does work when I set the clock back to 2009), Solaris 10.

Ultra60 2x450MHz UltraSPARC II, 2GB RAM, 9GB U160 and 36GB U320 drives, CDROM

A1200T, 603e-240mhz/040-50mhz SCSI, 256mb, MediatorSX, Voodoo3-3000, Soundblaster 128, 10/100 Ethernet, other stuff OS3.9

I'm guessing that the card was a 28Mhz 040 one then?

Sounds nice, I wouldn't mind one for my Quadra but they cost a bit.
Restraining orders are just another way of saying I love you!

The '040 I replaced was a 25mhz version. I don't really know why it's running at 57mhz. They cost about 99USD, 59.33GBP, or 84.73 euros.

I have one on a 3640  in my 3000 also. It works well.
