AmigaOS 4.0 idea screenshots by DJNick
« on: September 22, 2002, 12:57:03 AM »
I was following AmigaOne and AmigaOS 4.0 progress via the Net and, to be honest, I espected a lot more. So I decided to create my vision of what OS4 should LOOK like.

Amiga Inc. really needs good artists and icon/background designers because what they displayed as OS 4.0 feels very, very cheap and unattractive :(

Today I played a little with Photoshop and created something what I would like to see in AmigaOS4.0.

So please go to djnick.co.yu and select one of two OS4.0 ideas in .jpg format. The first one consists comments over the image [1024x768, 299kb] and the second one is without them [1024x768, 194kb]. I hope these images will help AmigaOS developers our dream finally come true!

Now that's what I'm talking about!  Amiga Inc. (or Hyperion) make it happen... please :-D

@djnick

Very interesting ideas and amazing screenshots   :-D

During previous discussions about AmigaOS4.0, some other amazing screenshots were shown.

Thankyou to everyone who has shared their ideas.

I sincerely hope Hyperion will include the tools to allow  us to make these ideas come true..

Its very nice, certainly better than any winXP desktop I've seen... but there's one thing.. why are we still thinking in only 2 dimensions?

The future of the Workbench desktop should be in 3d GUI design.  For example, windows could "fold" instead of minimise, icons could be 3d rendered, animated etc. The mouse could act as a lightsource, casting shadows on the other icons, desktop items and windows.

Applications could rotate into view, rather than slide like workbench screens.

And why are we still using mice? We shoudl be using next generation pointing devices, gestures etc to make computing more intuitive and powerful...

Lets see if we can come up with some groundbreaking GUI designs, instead of going over old ground.

Well done anyway mate, like it a lot!

Cheers,
AndyC

Nice Work :-)

I hope that Hyperions GUI people'll implement some of this in OS4 or if not, in a later update.
Kind Regards

First of all it's good to hear that DJ Nick is still about, I used to enjoy the stuff that he sent in to Amiga Format.

I hate to sound negative here but I wasn't impressed with it. The actual window gadgets are just OS3.1 ones with a birdie pattern over it.  Sorry, but I think it looks messy.  Yes the OS 4 shots were total pants, but I don't think this is much better. Simoami's designs were great (although some stuff would break intution design and isn't feasible at the moment, an the icons aren't as good as glowicons)

Sorry for being negative :-(

Although its pretty obvious a lot of thought have been put into these picures, they seem to me a bit 90'ties. Its pretty obvious though that it should be made possible to skin your amiga. Theres something special about an interfase that noone but you have

Great Ideas, and great screenshots!

The primary thing to want is fast and reliable OS, but it would be essential that we have things like ones shown in those screenshots.

Every time i see this i say the same thing. So here it goes again.

AmigaOS should NOT look like this, but, be ABLE to look like this. Those are two very different things.

DJNICK, or whatever ya name is... As soon as Skinning is stable in AmigaOS, i want you to turn this into a Skin. If you think AmigaOS should look like this, make it possible :) - its up to you, not Hyperion or Amiga Inc.

They are providing a foundation from which we can use our imagination to create what ever we want. That is the best way. This way, we make everyone happy!!

So, when OS4.2 comes out (when skinning is availiable), ill expect to see another post from you, showing off some new skins!

Hopfuly, we'll be able to get a section at themes.org :) (an AmogaOS section that is)

I am fully agree with Rodney here. To tell you the truth: I (means: my opinion) hate fluffy GUI. The first thing I am always looking for: how can I switch back to something simplier, modest, confortable and (especially!) resource-wise way of look.

I like fast Amigas, but while it is about rendering drop shadows, and transparent windows, I can hardly believe it will actually put all the performance what I really want to.  :-?

It's nice. Nothing too radical and quite practical.

I can't really see anything that can't be done
without current patches/hacks/DOpus plus
the new AmiDock; asides from more animated
icons and transparent backgrounds.

I agree it's about time KingCON functionality was
standard in the shell.
