But one consulting company, Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner, questioned whether it will be worthwhile for corporations to replace their Microsoft-based desktops, even with a lower-cost package from Sun.

Hmmm. Before or after the Microsoft bubble bursts? Sooner or later it'll happen (and then watch the technology stocks plummet - stock markets are ruled by idiots). Apparently they're already accused of reneging on the wimpy DoJ settlement, new security holes in XP (you know, the OS that eXPells you from control of your own computer) appear practically every day, they've already been caught falsifying their accounts, the Xbox is selling badly, whole countries are dumping MS software for open source (even my children's school is abandoning M$ Office for Openoffice.org cheers cheers cheers).
What price a M$-infested desktop if M$ finally gets split up, or loses its de facto monopoly?

That sadly won't happen in the UK due to the fact that 98% of all school and college system admins are computer illiterate morons, whilst the other 2% are prevented from using anything other than Windows/RM Connect (the devils own vomit in software form) by thier bosses who are generally computer illiterate morons.

I'll stop there before going into a rant about how millions of pounds of taxpayers money is being wasted every year on "educational ICT".

Our Office just did this. MS introduced a new licencing scheme and we had to up date our licences, or we just never had the licences in the first place (im not saying where i work :P).

So now we're with Open  Office, i havnt yet uninstalled MS so i havnt had the pleasure of useing it as yet. But as soon as people get used to its difference and its bugs, all seems to be alright :)

Microtel makes them, retailed through WalMart, and have LindowsOS preinstalled.

http://www.lindows.com/wallmart199

Perfect for a networked second computer, and with a CD burner (and dialup modem if you are into that) it would be a great standalone unit.
