Amiga Inc. at MicroMart Computer Fair (UK) on 21st and 22nd Sept
« on: September 15, 2002, 02:30:10 AM »
The Mainstream MicroMart Computer Fair is next weekend (21st/22nd Sept.) at the NEC near Birmingham, UK - and there is to be an Amiga presence.

Following a year of weekly AmigaMart pages in the UKs MicroMart magazine, there will be a presence at the first MicroMart computer Fair.

Due to be on display are various Amigas, including a prototype of the AmigaOne G3-SE 600, and demonstrations of DE content.

See the listing at The Amiga Inc. website or the

MicroMart Computer Fair site. for more details including ticket prices.

Yeah this is good to see.... the NEC is massive!

I wonder what sort of press they'll get  :-?

It can't hurt and like you say Bob, they'll be a lot of people there... people that go to this sort of fair aren't necessarily blinded by M$ either...

It'll be interesting to see what happens..

Don't expect huge press coverage or anything like that. Being at the show dows not mean automatic high profile in the press.

However, it is good to be at a mainstream show where many ex-Amigans might be around who gave up on it many years ago and no longer follow events. This will inevitably attract their interest as well as some from new potential punters.

The really clever trick is to transform interest into customers...

Let's hope that next year instead of having prototypes and previews to show, there will be a pile of new working hardware and software - including some serious DE software and x86 stuff - to attract buyers as well as crowds.

I've just checked out the exhibitor list on the MicroMart website.  I can't find the AmigaMart stall shown on the floor plan, but I hope its not tucked right in the corner.

The companies are of the small indepenant PC vendors variety, that regularly advertise in MM.  Just don't expect the Compaqs and Dells of this world to be there.

Still any Amiga presence at a mainstream show is good news. :-)  I'm sure  that alot of people will be surprised to find that the Amiga isnt completey dead, and a few will be interested enough to buy an A1!  :-D

Yes, it does sound like that Wayne.. however it's still good to see.  A lot of people there will not believe that the Amiga is still 'active' or even know about DE etc..

I don't expect miracles, but hey..

I went to ComDex/Atlanta last week (fabulous, huge computer show).  That does not suggest that Amiga.org was represented at Comdex.

The fact that a user group might have space, or Fleecy might take time out of his "sheep buggering" (his quote) schedule to attend a computer show does not denote an official "presence".  Amiga Inc

- has nothing to promote,
- they have nothing to sell,
- the Amiga community at large will not be there en masse as they are for an official Amiga show

so I would hope Amiga Inc would NOT spend their very precious (and rare) money to "be there".

@Wayne

You're right, this is not some kind of official Amiga Inc promotion effort.

AFAIK, the whole Amiga angle is organised by Sven Harvey, who has a weekly article in MicroMart, and Fleecy has simply agreed to come down and demonstrate the DE/AmigaAnywhere stuff on his laptop. I think everyone on the AmigaMart stand is probably going to be there on a voluntary basis and at their own expense, rather than some official capacity.

@bhoggett,

Thanks very much for the clarification.  That's cool and all.  Didn't mean to suggest otherwise.

If they had ANY common sense (which is sincerely in doubt), Fleecy'd take a bunch of Entertainment packs and try to sell them to the much wider audience in attendance.  It doesn't take a booth and incredible expense to hang out with you guys and hawk wares at a computer show.  Hell, if nothing else, they could quickly create and give away a demo CD with a time limited player and game demos.  Hell, even professional color flyers handed out to passers-by would help.

Absolutely right. This is a selling type of fair, not an expo. The punters will be there for one purpose only: to buy, buy, buy.

It's a shame Amiga Inc won't have any goods for sale, but that's been an overused refrain for far too long now.  :-(

As for myself, I have nothing to do with the show, and wasn't planning to be there. It's still possible that might change, and I might be able to take an Ami* demo down, but that depends on outside factors so I have no details at the moment. Sadly, I won't have anything for sale either.  :-(

Demonstrating the same Amiga Anywhere content running on O2 XDAs, Sendo smartphones, Zaurus PDAs and Fleecy's laptop would surely impress many people, if well presented.
