It would be something completely different if H&P themselves were to publically show off OS4 at a gathering or the like. If they had some low quality setups in the GUI visuality department, then and only then hang them by the rope. The guys showing these demos are just people like you and me, with the diifference that they have got their hands on some beta testing software.

Well, that would be correct if it wasn't for the fact that H&P isn't involved in the devlopment of AmigaOS4 at all. AmigaOS4 is developed by Hyperion + certain partners of theirs.

Besides, where did those screenshots come from? I know Gunne has an AmigaOne but does he have a beta version of AmigaOS4 as well?

Anyway, stop complaining about the looks already. No design work has been made yet at all since that is the last thing you apply when developing software. The GUI engine isn't even finished yet. Take Mason's word for it, it will look so much better once it becomes a finished product, ok?

Those pics were (it says on the GGS-data page) taken by Gunne, the owner of GGS-data. I suppose they are of his own setup. The fact that old-style icons are mixed with glowicons should hint to the whiners among you that  this is not the final look in any way...

But I agree that it would proably be better PR-wise had he cleaned up some of those icons / windows before taking the snabshots...

Have anyone else thought about to the fact that apparently no OS4 - developer (of those we have seen) works in even a remotely attractive desktop environment? Poor bastards, they wotk so hard they haven't even got the time to get a decent backdrop (Gunne excepted)... ;-)

Anyway,  the great news is that OS4 will be at the Gothenburg event. And me too!

I think there has been design work done (e.g. by Mason) but that it just isn't implemented yet in this demo ...
Anyway, if these are 'official' screenshots, they sure look better than those from that event in France ...

You're right, Kuant_Ti. Of course I just meant that no design work has been *implemented* yet which definitly doesn't mean that no design work has been made.

My mistake, sorry.

@mason:

woohoo! the Mason is in the house!  :-D

I remember reading somewhere that Matt "newicons" Chaput was supposed to be doing some artwork for OS4.  Between the two of you, this thing is going to end up looking GREAT!

{rant}Why in the world is everyone obsessed with the eyecandy aspect of the OS? To me that's another example of the M$ influence on all computing.

Sure, backdrops or wallpaper, or whatever you call it can be nice, but I could care less about what kind of New-Mason-Glow-2D-3D-5D Icons the OS comes with. (This is -not- ment to put down the talented people who work hard to create such things.) We've been told so many times by every party who has the right make such announcements that everything will be skinable. They must be sick of saying it.

I want the features. I want the power boost. I want rendering time to go down. Everything else is just nice to have. My Amigas' "Themes" are getting work done on a user friendly OS. {/rant}

Seriously, if skinability is there, no two Amigas will look remotely alike.

Very true. The functionaliity is what really matters. But still I would guarantee you that *I* would clean up and polish my desktop as much as I ever could if I was going to put pictures of it on the 'web.  Particularily if I was trying to promote a new product...

No offense, but I can't believe that's even close to the new AmigaOS 4.0 GUI.

Its not. This is a developer machine running the developers custome desktop.
Quote

This is not the way to introduce AmigaOS4.0 to the world, they'll laught at us if they didn't do that the first time Hyperion posted some screenshots of the new OS.

We're not introducing anything to anyone (yet). This is for the current Amiga Community to upgrade their hardware and get ready for the next generation of software and hardware. Note, this is not it. This is just a path to get there.

What happend to that individual who was supposed to design the new Amiga look?

I dont know who your talking about, but there are people working on it. these people are without doubt working towards skinning and possibly some graphix to go with the engine for release 4.2 NOT 4.0.

Quote

Whoever took those screenshots, please get rid of that terrible topaz font and download Jaybee's AmigaInABox than you'll know what I mean

This is someones personal GUI presentation its NOT a default look. This guy has taken his machine to the show to SHOW people some software that is beign written. He hasnt shown us his computer so we could comment on his preferences and tell him where he's going wrong to make him have a better looking desktop.

Please people, think before you write. OS4 is a progressing system towards OS5. "Looks" at this stage is very unimportant as i dont think you'll see either Amiga Inc or Hyperion doing any mass advertising before OS5 is released or before they think it is ready to do so. That is not now!!!

These arnt even screenshots posted by Amiga inc. Why would anyone start to worry about it? Its just someones personal prefrences, set up they way they like it!!! Geeshhh
It almost sounds like you are involved
I believe mason is creating some icons (and some widgets? [nice pictures for controls]) for OS4. He may also have his hand in the skinning too... Well, some skins anyway.

I don`t care what it looks like in default....I`ll change it to the way I like it as most others will.

I just want it stable & released! ;-)

Surely just parts of OS4, shown running on OS3.5/9, but nice to see some of it completed.

Anyway, we (The Guyver and I) will be driving the 250km to Göteborg from Denmark, so I really hope for a nice presentation (allthough probably only Linux and some components will be shown..).

Anyone knows a cheap place to stay in Göteborg as we plan not to leave sweden until late sunday?

Best regards

I would love to see some good show reports from this event!  :-)

For this upcomming weekend there are at least 4 Amiga-related events planned. Very impressive, personally I already look forward to the big German Amiga show, to be held in Aachen upcoming December.   :-D
