Project Petunia pages (the emulator, that will be used in AmigaOS4) updated and extended with a FAQ.

After a long period of checking forums, chatboards and answering e-mails I decided to add a FAQ part into the project page. I hope I can clean up all the important questions arising in you. If something is not clear enough feel free to write a mail.

Anyone know if OS4 even needs 68k emulation or is it 100% PPC?

AmigaOS 4.0 needs only the JIT 68k emulator, if you want to use 68k Amiga software, the OS should be 100% PPC (As far as I know) :-D

@hnl_dk
That is NOT what Ben said.....

Core parts will be PPC, but some other parts are planned for later.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

That's what I understood too.  But the key parts that need the performance from the PPC chip will be native, and other parts will come in updates.

At least give us a PPC calculator, that is essential,
I can't imagine what it would be running that in 68k emulation... :-D

Hi
I hope they will use "FX!32" or Transistive Dynamite approach. Using FX!32, 68K applications are converted to PowerPC through several iteration. First execution is pure emulation, but the result is stored as combo PowerPC - 68K codes. On the 2nd run, more codes are converted / optimized. In the end the software will be fully ported to PowerPC.

It might be that OS4 can have 68k (non-JIT) emulation, so that Petunia isn't immediately needed to run it. But I don't know. We'll have to see.

I guess that could be a possibility. Since Petunia won't emulate MMU's.

Hey, take a chill pill, don't fall into the crazy world of the 'unbelievers'.

For those of you who don't realise, this is a major piece of the OS4 jigsaw. After all, it doesn't require a Nuclear Physicist to work out that no 68k emulation = no applications (well alright, hardly any).

With it now ready enough to be slotted into the OS, it's another step closer for OS4 heading toward a Beta release, rather than the Alpha that it currently is.

Don't be afraid, both clock and calculator will be PPC native...  It will be blazing fast! ;-)

Everything from the recent AmigaOS will be PPC-native, only 3rd party stuff is waiting for emulation/conversion.
