Latest Beta Version: Directory Opus 4.17 Pre 13

This is the latest beta release of DirOpus4. This archive contains only the files that changed since the last public release, so you have to install the latest public release before installing the beta version.

Ok now I'm confused.

isnt this the same product but a "higher" version number
or have I missed something
Welcome to Directory Opus Magellan-II!
and
Directory Opus 4.16

They look the same to me... The "new" version 4 appears to be free however.

What am I missing ????

Hi newbee,

Greg Perry mentioned a while back that he was no longer supporting the Amiga with new releases of Directory Opus.  This means that anyone who has the latest version of Magellan II (5.82, I believe) is up to date with regards to his releases.

But, while he did state no more support for the Amiga, he did release the source code for DOpus 4 to the masses so we, the community, could continue on our own.  This 4.17 version is the current result of members of the community playing with said code.

What this means is that DOpus will continue to be updated (albeit based on the 4.0 code) so it can properly be used with future versions of the AmigaOS.

While it would have been nicer if he had released the Magellan II source code, it's understandable why he didn't: Directory Opus 6 for Windows is based on said code, and releasing it would have compromised his position on that platform.

Thanks for the update, the situation is much clearer now.

I have one question though.
Why call the "open source" versin 4.XXX

The tradition with opensource (if there is such a thing) where there is a "closed" and an "open" version is to call the open source version "OpenXXX" and re-set the version count to 1.

It is less confusing that way.

eg OpenDopus 1 or ODOpus 1
