Can I make Atari St disk on my Amiga 2000?
« on: September 27, 2003, 09:13:48 PM »
If it's possible anybody know where I can find info
to make Atari ST disk on my Amiga, that can be used
on a 1040ST.  I picked up an Atari at flea market a year ago.  I wouldn't mind being able to play around with it.

I think there is a Programmcompilation called ProjectD which can make IBM and Atari 720 KB disks.

IIRC STs are supposed to be able to read MS-DOS formatted disks (their native format is very similar, and compatible).  So something like cross-dos should work.

If I remember correctly, Atari disks were Ms-Dos format, so you can just format one using cross dos and copy the files you want to it.
I think a friend did this with an AtariST game. He copied the files from a disk image to a 720KB formated disk.

Yeah, the Atari ST uses the exact same method as Microsoft DOS.
I know this because I formatted an old PC coverdisk in the ST and I could access all of the files on there. Likewise when I put an ST disk into a Windows 98 PC running MS-DOS.

An Atari ST computer can read a PC formatted disk, but a PC can NOT read an Atari formatted disk.  The two formats are similar, but a PC writes extra stuff to the disk and the Atari ST does not (they don't need it).  CrossDOS for the Amiga can read and write Atari formatted disks.  I personally use CrossDOS version 4.02a on my own Amiga 2000HD professional computer.  The Atari ST is my second favorite computer and I do own an Atari Mega ST4.   So, I do know what I am talking about.

ST disks wont work on PC's without DOS.
But in MS-DOS, you can access ST disks no problem

To Staticman:

You are wrong about that.  A PC can NOT read an Atari ST formatted disk, unless you use a program on the Atari ST that formats PC formatted disks.  The Atari ST and PC disk formats are similar, but are NOT the same.     :smack:

I seem to remember that some of the first Atari St's had single-sided drives.

To JimS:

The Atari 520ST with external power supply and disk drives used 2 types of drives- SS/DD and DS/DD.  The DS/DD drive was an upgrade option offered by Atari.  Later on, when the Atari 520FM ST and the Atari 1040 ST was released, the DS/DD disk drive became the standard.  Around this same time period the Amiga 1000 computer hit the market.  The disk drives found in the Atari ST drives were better quality then the disk drives found in the Amiga 1000 computer.  The early Atari ST drives were made by NEC, Epson, and Panasonic.  They were built like German Tiger Tanks!     :-D
