RealNetworks: Open Source Streaming Player: HELIX

RealNetworks, the leading multimedia streaming software vendor, plan to release HELIX, an Open Source streaming player. Perhaps in the future this software will be ported to AmigaOS and AmigaDE.

Not to sound rude or anything, I think we all know what Amiga needs as far as software support, but I think we really need to concentrate on getting the new OS to run new software on. It nice to dream about all the cool stuff, but until its reality I am not keeping much hope out for a streaming player. I would much rather have the system in front of me to play with.

Something you may want to take a look at with a bit more "future stance".  If you go to the Helix web page and scroll down to the very bottom, you'll see names such as TAO Group involved in the community effort.  That means either TAO as a whole is interested in Helix or there is one person working at Tao who has been given permission to work on Helix in their spare time.  It's an interesting piece of the puzzle, but I don't know for sure if this is indeed part of the larger picture TAO is providing.

:pint:
I love the modern age world of this middle age crises America... all these SUVs driving around like there\\\'s gas to spare and then some.

@ Kent

Good eye!

That would be very nice if TAO group  bring this to the Amiga. Streaming media on a handheld Amiga computer would be very nice.

Spiffy  :-D

We'll unless Hyperion are the only developers left, I think you don't need to worry about the OS itself.

OS4 is a sure thing as far as I'm concerned.

I'd be willing to develop this for AMiGA, but I don't have an amiga atm (A1 preordered with KDH, coupon bought, etc).

So really, this is all good and no need for any rude stuff as you put it :-P

RealVideo streaming is already supported by Frogger2, using the LinuxPPC codec.

RealAudio streaming has been suppported for a long time now.
