File handling under AmigaOS 3.x

Say for example I have a file written by WordWorth.  Under that file's information (presumably stored in the .info file?), there is a path to the executable that wrote the file, with which the user can double-click on the file, and it fires up that executable to load the file in the way it was intended.

Is there a piece of software that will edit the meta-information of a load of files of all the same type to point the path of the executable elsewhere?

I realise this is a bit of a long-winded way around the houses, I hope people get what I mean though :-)

You're thinking of changing the default tool (? It's been a while) in a whole bunch of .info files right? I think I had an Arexx script (or something) for that in the ol' days. I'll see if I can find it and send it to you.

I believe you're talking about the Default tool in an file's icon.

The way I deal with this is by not saving icons with files and using DOpus Magellen II filetypes to attach an appropriate icon.  All I need to do then is change the Default tool of the 'master' icon of a particular filetype, and all iconless files matching that filetype will now have the new Default tool.

If you don't have DOpus there is a program called DefIcons which IIRC does a similar thing.  I believe it comes with OS3.9 and is also available in an earlier version on Aminet.

This only works on iconless files (viewed with Show All from one of the WB menus), you'll have to set up your programs (i.e. Wordworth) to save files without icons.  I'm not aware of any program that can do a batch operation of this sort on existing icons.

I recommend going for the no icons approach though.  Saves heaps of HD space and makes file handling much easier.

For a while I used 'ToolAlias' to get around tools that weren't where  project icons expected them to be.  It worked well but was high maintenance to keep it's tool data up to date.

Like Xyth I now use Dopus to handle most of the filetyping but when the tool is moved, even Dopus needs to be retold where to find it.

I found   DefTool,  DeftoolManager, and Deft II  (all in Aminet/util/wb) very useful.  All are pretty easy to use but Deft II will work it's way through a directory tree making all the changes you ask, not just in the current directory.

DefIcons is the better choise IMHO.

If WW documents has an extension, is very simple to setup.

If WW hasn't extension, DefIcons can recognize the filetype, from its header. (you must drag two WW files inside the DefIcons configuration tool).

The only work you'll must do, will be to erase manually ALL the original WW documents icons and create/configure 1 single def_WW.info in Env-Archive:Sys/ dir.
