something from Ann

Just today I was contacted by somebody working at NASA, somebody from NATO and somebody from the
European Union.

All of them sending words of encouragement and offering support.

It just gets better and better...

I hope OS4 gets as much interest in hard sales as the screenshots are getting.  It deserves it, well done to all the developers involved in making it happen, hopefully I'll have it running on a shiny new AmigaOne before June is out.

cool, NASA can now replace their aging telemetry computers (last I knew they used Amigas for non-manned space probe telemetry).

This is fantastic but, as above, I hope there will be something a bit smarter for them to look at sometime fairly soon :)

It has been said, and I've always agreed, that screenshots will tell little to nothing about the product itself however, it seems that the effect in terms of creating interest and boosting community morale has been astounding - good move HP!  :-D

Sorry guys, i must admit, i returned to the Pages about 6 times the day you posted them, and i still go back looking at them now :)

Sorry :}

hehe.... At least this shows the Amiga Community still holds at least a fairly large community or shows us that others hold some interest in it. I know some of the BeOS community like or at least are interested in AmigaOS. Thats about the only other community though! - But their pliet now is just like ours was and well still is!

That is, BeOS fans are also struggling for the Apps and the Hardware :) and better support. Someone said on Osnews they wouldnt mind OBOS and AmigaOS to combine, well, i dont like their chances :}.

I think AmigaOS will be better off on its own. Amiga Inc have some grand grand plans.

It wouldn't surprise me to see some of the BeOS community turn to Amiga now the BeOS is fairly well "dead"...(can't really say dead cuz Amiga is testament to the staying power when a comunity is behind it) and I think AmigaOS will give the BeOS users some of the same features they like about their OS. I had BeOS 5 installed, and I liked it, there just wasn't anything that I could realyl do with it. I installed WinAmp for BeOS, set up my hardware (all of which had nicely working drivers except for my modem at the time, crappy Win-modem) and it was nice a fast. Booted up in seconds, as in under 12 after the BIOS screen. Just too bad nobody was behind them in the software department....Hopefully Amiga can get some really big guns (besides MS) interested in developing for it.

I can't see how OBOS and AmigaOS could be combined, since Amiga obviously wants to retain total control of the OS as proprietary IP, and I doubt if the OBOS coders would trust any company with their blood, sweat and tears after the Be Inc experience.

Considering that a lot of BeOS users were Amiga users before, it's natural that they'd be checking out AmigaOS again after Be died. I hope they/we find that AmigaOS has advanced beyond what BeOS is. I mean, I hope new features are added to AmigaOS so that it isn't just a PPC port of the older version with some updated legacy apps. BeOS had a lot of "buzzword" features, and AmigaOS should takeup where BeOS left off; otherwise, people other than hardcore fans are going to say "what's the point?"

As for the "big guns" of software, I think it's really doubtful that any will get on board any time soon. They are bottomline-driven, and if the user numbers aren't there, they won't even consider it. It just makes no sense for them financially. This is something that BeOS users are keenly aware of, since we went through this cycle fairly recently.

If AmigaOS hopes to attract major software developers, I think two things are necessary: First, a lot of users (or else a smaller number of heavy-spending users, as in a vertical niche market). Second, the OS needs standout features that will give the application software something major that the vendors can't get on the mainstream platforms, something that is quickly translateable into sales points for their products. The app vendors have to see AmigaO$ :-) .

Clearly the Amiga userbase will take time to ramp up. Amiga should be doing its utmost to encourage (bribe, blackmail or whatever) some great core third-party software development. This doesn't need to be from Adobe or Macromedia or MS, but it should be best-in-class, or close to it (or "new class" in the sense of being a new product category). It could be the product of a small outfit. The point is, even hardcore fans will stray from the platform if there isn't software to do everyday tasks in a way that is at least on par with the mainstream equivalents.

This could be an opportunity for established Amiga programs to be brought up to date. But I think the OS needs to be fully "modernized" and the apps as well, or else only old-time fans will be satisfied.

I think the majority of the apps for AmigaOS will be "homegrown," coming out of current or former Amiga developers, unless the OS has some really jawdropping qualities. Because these developers are basically individuals or small outfits, Amiga should do its best to coordinate with them.

Sorry for rambling; just some thoughts on the subject ;-) .

I agree with one of the previous posts. What use is a fantastic OS without killer apps? You don't just boot up your OS to fiddle with the icons and open and close windows - well not for very long anyway. For Amiga to succeed they will need to have some decent applications from the beginning, or at least in the very near future. It's unlikely that we'll get a port of Microsoft Office but we need something of that calibre, or better to make an impact.

I hope that doesn't sound too negative, but as yet I haven't heard any news about what end user software will be available for the A1, apart from the older software that will run under emulation.

The A1 will not succeed, even with a spanking new OS that runs rings around Windows or Max OSX, if it doesn't have a great suite of end user programs.
