Mozilla 1.0 RC1 released

Mozilla 1.0 RC1 has been released. You can download it (but not for Amiga!) from the mozilla.org ftp site and read about it here.

Oh my god, this browser really rocks.
Amiga.org has a small insignificant graphical error on the top bar, but thats it for now, tested a lot of different sites and they all are displayed correctly, first off two sites did get drawn quite slowly but since them sites have been drawn up much faster than my buggy IE 6 version usually does, quite impressive.

Now if only there were an OS 4 and Mozilla :-D

I have to agree, this is one really good browser.  The hell that I live in everyday (Windows) has been made more bearable due to the fact of completely banishing IE and Outlook Express links from the system.

Now roll on an OS4 version, can't wait for my dev board :-)

How about bugs? Cause the last time I used mozilla it pretty much sucked, it was full of bugs...

Mozilla is much more mature now, you should try it. I'd be lost with out being able to click on a link with the mousewheel button and have the link come up in a maximised new window.

I think the coolest thing is the tabbed browsing, just like iBrowse does it, great feature.  Means you don't get a screen full of windows, just one browser.

Think I prefer the way Mozilla does it over Opera too.

I have to disagree. I see Mozilla as a big bloated piece of open-source with a spaghetti junction code (which is one of the reasons why no-one has been able to port it to the Amiga). It takes ages to load and its gui is slow even on a new PC. It is also a lot larger than it needs to be.

If I have to endure the horror of surfing on a PC my own preference is Opera, which I find to be much faster, stabler, more compatible, smaller and more powerful. I would prefer this to get ported to OS4 instead of (or as well as) Mozilla. It's commercial but the firm gets most of its money from advertising. Opera is free, but to get rid of the (fairly unintrusive) commercials on the top-right you can buy it.

End plug ;-) But if you really want to support the Amiga buy or register an Amiga browser - or all 3 :-)

Mozilla hasn't been ported to the Amiga specifically because the hardware is to old to support new software (duh!) - until the AmigaOne.

Also, your claim that Mozilla runs slowly on new PCs is nonsense. Even on my Celeron 800, which is pretty slow by today's PC standards, the browser starts instantly.

As for your "spaghetti code" stuff, note that this product is not even 1.0 yet. Also note that there is a much smaller "embedded" version of Mozilla that could pretty easily be ported to PPC hardware. Finally, note that there are rumblings in the Mozilla community already about ripping Mozilla into separate apps for 2.0.

Anyhow, with any luck Mozilla will be ported to Amiga OS 4.0 sometime soon and put those ridiculously priced, underperforming ($50!) Amiga browsers out to pasture once and for all.

It seems to be quite fast on my PIII-850 laptop computer.  It is as fast as IE6 and faster than  Netscape 6.2.

However, it does not handle Java Applets (at least the one that I have tested).  I have IE6 & Netscape 6.2 installed and both handle the Java Applet in question with no problems.

This does look like it will be a kick-ass browser when it is finished.

Erm, no. Mozilla is available for hardware older than the Amiga's
current "entry level", if you look at their site. Though perhaps no
Amiga has the VM it needs to run this big piece of bloatware.

Mozilla takes a full 12 seconds to load on my family PC, a brand new
and high-specced 1.3Ghz Athlon. I timed it. I suspect this may be
die to some cache option I haven't disabled, but then the settings are
at the defaults. And the GUI is still slow as hell, no matter which
way you cut it.

As for the "not being 1.0 yet" - no Linux apps are! They never make it
to 1.0 because they are always being developed. If you can find a
commonly used Linux app that is above 1.0 then show it here in
this forum please.

Don't wanna start an argument (if I did I'd post on ann  ;-)   ) but I'm running a 800mhz Athlon and Mozilla 1.0 loads in just under 4 seconds.  However, I have recently re-installed windows 98 (as you do  :-D  )

IMO Mozilla is a pretty cool browser.  I agree it is bloatware, but with the possible exception of Opera, all web browsers are.

Opera is a cool browser too.  I used to run that on my 486 DX100 with no problems and at a good speed.  Infact, I think I might download and try out the new one later  :-)

Hmm, how about Apache 2.0? Besides, Mozilla is NOT a Linux app, it is a cross-platform app that happens to have a Linux version.

And since Mozilla 1.0 RC1 is out, this program IS going 1.0.

Anyhow, I note you ignored my comment that Mozilla developers are already leaning towards ripping Mozilla into separate apps for 2.0. Just because 1.0 is indeed "bloatware" doesn't mean 2.0 will be, and as far as I'm concerned, for bloatware Mozilla kicks ass.
