New game engine from the creator of SHEEP
« on: April 15, 2002, 10:21:50 AM »
Wouter van Oortmerssen (aka Aardappel) is working on a new small game engine called Cube that uses OpenGL and SDL. (Currently, Cube is only available for Windows PCs.) You can check out screenshots and more info about Cube here.

Looks like it would be a fairly good engine to port for OS4 games.  From reading a few replys in the forums, sounds like a number of people there are running it just fine on a 500MHz class PC.

Wow, I had to go download and try for myself...it's really a fast engine, and seems pretty complete.

The creator said the engine is basicly writen for simplicity and brute force.

Meaning, he has writen it to get the job done and thats it. So, no optomisations or fancy algorithms have been implimented.

It does what it does, but it doesnt try to be super cool/fast/effiecent! - I dont think its a product to ment to compete with ID's software, but more of a hobby project.

It also sounds like its a bit of a learning platform. In that case, does he make the source avaliable?

Not sure about the source, but there are links to pages where people are crating Mods and Maps, etc for it.  It was extremely fast when I did a connect to server.  Everything was almost instantly loaded and on screen.  I was pulling 150fps constantly.

Now I play a number of online FPS games on the PC (UT, Serious Sam 1&2, JK2:Jedi Outcast...) and they are much more advanced in overall complexity from what I can tell just playing with this for a few minutes...but I was impressed with what that engine did, and the download was only just over 6MB!

It would be very nice to have an engine like this in the hands of Amiga style bedroom programmers. Thousand and one little 1st person 3d games on aminet :)

Well, I admit it's built for gaming.  PIII 1GHz, 256MB PC133, 40G ATA100 Hard Drive, SB Live Platinum, and Geforce3 Ti200 (64mb version).  But still, it impressed me that such a fast engine that looked pretty complete came out of such a small 6MB download.

I would like to have seen a demo of SHEEP rather than ANOTHER game engine for the PC. Nice anyways, but I want to see and work with SHEEP. Would be good if the engine was built into SHEEP using OS4's  and DE's 3D API's (built on Warp3D right?) make SHEEP into a serious all purpose language, games included.

I wonder too if it will be available for AmigaOS?  Like Bjorn said...it would be nice to see some Amiga coders get this and grow it into some really nice fps.

SHEEP is a figment of imagination, a do it all scripting, programming, interpreted, compiled, etc....
It exists ony in the alpha mind state, that place you are at when you are falling asleep from counting
to many sheep.

Hey, what's the status of sheep. It's the whole reason for me to buy a computer. Let people control the pixals. Not a paint program. Sheep for nintendo gamecube?

LOL.... could be!  On the other shots it is replaced by a T-shirt.  There are maps with water in them, after all... didn't know they provided a suit to put on before jumping in. :)
