Argggh!!! More OS 3.5 problems!!!
« on: September 23, 2003, 05:22:26 PM »
I finally got OS 3.5 loaded on my A4000D, only to find that the Toaster 3.1 and PAR 2.55 software doesn't run!  I get a bunch of lines across the screen and then the dreaded GURU.  This sucks!  Especially after dropping the cash for the ROM's

Is there something I'm missing, or do I need to back up to 3.0?

I thought OS3.5 was awfull! It didn't run properly at all on my A1200T. I spent ages trying to installit, the installer would always crash out, then I finally managed to install it and it was utter ####, nothing worked right.

OS3.9 was much better, not a single prob so far (fingers crossed).
Restraining orders are just another way of saying I love you!

I have had 3.5 for quite a while.  I used it with my A3000D, but never on the 4000.  I recent sold the 3000, and decided to "upgrade" the 4000 a bit.  So, I just needed the ROM's to install OS 3.5.

I've gone back to 3.0.  My 5 gig drive is back to 2 gig (2, 1 gig partitions) and I'm reloading all my software.

There is indeed a problem between OS3.5 and using VT / VF.  While the root cause of the trouble was never fully determined (generally believed to be caused by installation scripting and a few library changes) the following is known:

1. OS3.5 was never beta tested against VT / VF. Apparently when OS3.5 was being developed, the toaster somehow was overlooked.  Go figure (this statement from Haage and Partner when I encountered trouble with my toaster while installing OS3.5 way back when. I emailed them for help and that is what they told me).
2.  If you were upgrading from OS3.1 to OS3.5 with toaster s/w already installed and running, it was "hit or miss" if the upgrade would cause the toaster to quit working (some people had no problems, others, including me could not get the toaster / flyer to start after upgrading).  Clean installs of OS3.5 and toaster s/w encountered similar issues.
3. Upgrading from OS3.1 to OS3.9 caused very few issues for toaster / flyer users.  Most people (myself included) readily dumped 3.5 as soon as 3.9 came out.

As others in this thread have  already suggested, get OS3.9 instead.  OS3.5 was basically useless to toaster users.

------
With regards to your ROMs, keep them. Just move on to OS3.9 and you will be much happier. Put the OS3.5 CD on your shelf of s/w never to be used again or sell it on ebay.  I would suggest that you reload your system using your old OS (ver 3.0?) and when you know everything is running, upgrade to 3.9.  I have found this method to be better for toaster users then doing a clean install.

Agreed. 3.5 was cack. I write some Amiga software and have to do a bit of support to get it to work on 3.5, while it runs flawlessly on 3.9.

I don't think they debugged it at all, IMHO...

I agree. Amiga OS 3.9 was an improvement over 3.5.

I'm not disagreeing that 3.9 is an improvement, but I have to say, 3.5 has never given me any problems at all. Having said that, my system is a bit basic...

3.5 hasn't given me any problems at all.  To be fair, this was the first update to AmigaOS for five(?) years, updated by people who hadn't even seen the source code before.  I think they did a good job, considering the circumstances.  And of course 3.9 is better, as it is 3.5+bug-fixes+more.

Actually, I have an A4000T with Toaster/Flyer
and I run OS3.5 without any problems.  I do
recommend installing the 2 "boing bag" updates
though as that helps a lot. 3.9 is definately
a little better packaged though.

Realstar,

Consider yourself among the fortunate few.  Almost as soon as OS3.5 was released (retail) complaints started to appear on VTFML.  Like you, there were some who encountered no problems but there were far more who complained of varying degrees of failure (of toaster / flyer) when 3.5 was installed.   Haage and Partner did look into the matter but no definitive (aka root cause) cause was ever found.  Many NewTek users moved back to OS3.1 until OS3.9 was released. Curiously, when 3.9 was released, there were very few NewTek related issues.

Thanks for the info on 3.9.  Since I've spent the money for the ROM's, I might as well give 3.9 a try.  Is anyone using the DPS PAR board and 2.55 software with 3.9?

Thanks
