WHDLoad Question
« on: May 26, 2009, 08:12:27 AM »
What exactly does WHDLoad allow you to do?  Does it allow you to play any Amiga game from your HD?  Will it allow otherwise non-compatible Amiga games to work on your particular model Amiga (ex.  Alien Breed on an Amiga 1200).  Thanks.

yes, that is exactly what it does: play games from HD fully (and quit back to workbench too, where you find everything the way you left it before starting the game) and providing various fixes so all games work in all amiga models, regardless of cpu/chipset used

It allows you to play any Amiga game from your HD which has had a WHDLoad installer created for it. There's a list of installers here:

Yes, the installers generally make the game more compatible.

Is the setup pretty elaborate, or is it a simple file you drop in the C: directory?  I believe I attempted to load it in the past but was unsuccessful.

which version do I use?  The WHDLOAD.dev.lha or WHDLOAD.usr.lha?  Which one is the more common version to use?

WHDLoad usr. The Dev archive is for making your own installers for games which don't already have one.

Just install the usr archive, then go to the link I posted above and download installers for the individual games you want to install. Run each of their installers and follow the instructions.

If you are using an accelerated Amiga 2000, will the games play faster or will the program slow it down to actual speed>  Thanks.

I think it depends on the installer. Generally they run at the proper speed.

games that need slowdown will slowdown. games that need "horsepower" (like 3D ones) will generally use as much speed as possible...

This is awesome.  For compatibility reasons, I had my Amiga 3000 stored away since it only ran about 50 percent of my software.  Now I can  use the 3000 for all my gaming and put away my 20 ton Amiga 2000.

Any tips for slowing some games down? Syndicate runs a little fast on my 40MHz Warpengined A4000.

Thanks,

@Barney

One small detail you will have to remember is some games require a certain kickstart file to be preloaded etc, these are not readily available, you'll need to use all your powers of resourcing to acquire such addons ;-)

@RMK305

You probably just need to disable a certain cache (try typing cpu or similair and see what the syntax for disabling certain functions is), or look for a suitable degrader program on Aminet perhaps... If I remember rightly though a WHDLoad version of Syndicate does exist? This would obviously solve the timing problem.

So,  how do I actually install a particular game on my hard drive.  Do I first need to adf2disk then install back to hard drive with the installer?  Thanks.
