OS 3.9 install issues - ARGHHHH!!!
« on: May 15, 2009, 06:19:29 PM »
Hi,

I'm trying to install OS 3.9 on my newly aquired A1200...it has a 20Gig HD, OS 3.1, apollo 040/25, 4way IDE, CD-ROM IDE, 3.1 Kickstart.

I have made emergency disk from the os 3.9 cd but when reboot from emergency disk, it loads for a bit, then stops at a point saying "Invalid resident library." Workbench is displayed at the top of the screen and a blue and grey background is displayed - then nothing happens.

also, who ever installed the hard drive only has it set up as under 4Gb......I also cannot see any 040 libs in the present workbench install.

Any ideas what the issues are here and how to resolve please?

Thanks. :-o

I don't know if this helps but on my 4000T 060 you had to be sure the cpu060 command was present along with the library on the emergency disk.  Since the 1200 is a native 030 if I remember correctly, it sounds like you missing a lib and maybe commands.  Try and boot off the disk that came with your 040 board.

It took me a while to create copies of the 3.5 install disk to get my 060 up and running.  My advise is install 3.5 then upgrade it to 3.9.  You will have to install the CD drivers manually.

Kinda taking a guess, but I think you'll need a 68040.library file on the boot floppy, in the LIBS folder.  Also, again a guess here, I'm faily certain the base OS cannot see beyond 4GB on the boot partition, thus the partition on your drive already under the 4GB limit.  Once the OS is up and running with all patches, larger partitions should be recognized.

Thankyou! I forgot about that.  It is best to partition your boot or system or whatever you call it to around 500MB.  That is what I read on this forum or on Aminet.  You can actually partition it to 2G.  As soon as the new FastFileSystem of 3.9 is copied it should recongize larger depending on your controller.  I had issues with that too.

I've heard conflicting stories on that too.  I've read 2GB is the boot partition limit, but I've had no problem with up to 4GB on certain hard drives.  I've never had a drive bigger than 4GB in an Amiga to confirm how that all worked.

I went from a 250MB to 73GB.  I had to install everything from scratch.  I ran into that issue.  I think I kept it at 4G partitions anyway since everything is so small on the Amiga.  There is a super file system or something like that on Aminet that is suppose to handle huge drives but I didn't have any luck with that.  But the Native 3.9 FastFileSystem worked well.  Also, with big drives, it takes away ram as well.

So what do I need to do exactly?

I mean this system is already working with workbench 3.1

It DOES have the 040 lib in the libs folder after all....

The workbench partition is 500MB....the other is 4Gb....

I don't have workbench 3.5 only the 3.9 CD I bought from a shop in Germany.

I found it.

http://www.gregdonner.org/os39faq/installtips.html#24

24. Q: Once I've created the emergency-disk and boot from it, the Workbench screen doesn't open and instead "LoadWB" returns: "Invalid resident library." Why?

A: The system currently has 3.0 ROMs installed, and the upgrade to 3.1 ROMs are needed per the list of requirements for OS 3.9.

Ebay has them for $42 US

Google is a wonderful thing.

Maybe one is bad or a bent pin.  Or you thought you bought 3.1 ROMS.  I would recheck your ROM install.
